Implementation and monitoring of forestry BMP's in SC

It has been my experience on this board that everytime logging and timbering is brought up, the consensus is that the majority are an unprofessional lot, prone to thieving and that they harbor little regard for the land or any future use the property may have, and that BMP's are something to be ignored. It is also a belief that they seek out tracts that are hunted and like to move in and cut them during hunting season.

I received a "Implementation Monitoring of Forestry BMP's for Harvesting and Site Preparation in South Carolina 2001-2003" today. Without going into many specifics, the findings were as follows:

Overall compliance for harvesting BMP's rose slightly to 94% in this survey.

The problems noted were:

Poorly designed skid trail stream crossings, poor skid trail design, and poorly planned skid trail location.

Harvesting the SMZ on perennial streams

Excessive logging debris in the perennial and intermittent streams.

Poorly stabilized haul roads and haul stream crossings and log deck location in sensitive areas.

On to site prep:

Compliance was determined for each category of BMP's applied to the site, including mechanical site preparation methods, chemical treatments, and prescribed burning.

During this survey, compliance with site preparation BMP's was 96%

So looking at overall compliance to BMP's, which is voluntary, was 94 and 96 percent respectively. Very professional indeed. :)
