Gobbling Question?

The last couple days I've noticed birds not gobblin' until they are on the ground. Once on the ground they gobble like crazy, 60-70 times. Won't respond to calling. After half hour or so...just shut down. What do you think they are doing? I went back to an area where this happened last week and killed him at 2:30. He came in silent. Do you think they are with a hen when they do this or looking? Why would they wait until they are on the ground before talking? How would you call to a bird in this situation, yelp, clucks or purrs...or even the infamous gobble? Yelping sure hasn't been working!

It sounds like you might be catching them in a strutting area. They fly down into or near this spot and get in there and set up shop. They gobble in an attempt to attract hens. They're not willing to move as the hens always come to them in this spot.

If they're gobbling from the same area each time, try getting into that area while it's still VERY dark and setting up quietly. Then, give 'em the tree call just before fly down time and then hush.

He's got hens, and gobbles due to the stress, not your calling. As mentioned, also in his zone, NO need to gobble long...
