View Full Version : Something to ponder

Generally speaking, the soils of the Southern Appalachains tend to be somewhat rocky.

Hillside farms which have been in cultivation for several generations will have piles of stones all around the fringe of the fields, having been placed there in the course of making the fields easier to cultivate.

As a rule, rocks of all sizes increase in numbers as one moves progressively up higher elevations.

Question: Why might there be greater numbers of rocks found at the higher elevations???

The ground is eroding away faster at a higher elevation, taking the soil and small sediments away, and leaving the rocks--Bubba

I think Bubba is right also.

I too think that Bubba is right. The Appalachians were once much taller than they are today. Rainfall and stream action have reduced them to todays elevations. Rocks, being resistent to movement by water, have remained somewhat in place. Rocks which once were underground are now on or near the surface.

Erosion has always been more significant at higher elevations. As the higher elevations eroded away, deposition likewise occurred. As erosion occurred, the heavier soil particles were deposited on mid-slopes, with the lighter particles moving into and forming the bottomlands seen today.
