Pictures of how one prepares an antler handle to fix a stone or a metal blade into it.

They all look so perty with the sinew wrapped around it but what is under that part?

I have some spare antler but it is no where near as Knobby as the pictures I have seen here it is a lot slimmer and a lot smoother, and one antler is almost flattened like a wooden spoon, thought some scrimshaw would look neat on it.

I just have no idea what it would take to fix a knife blade to it.

I did save some backstrap sinew and some leg tendons this year and the hooves to make the glue.

anow All i need is a primer on working bone and antler.

My daughter went hunting with me a lot this season, and we found an old, (what we assume is a cow) skeleton and marked the location for later retrieval as the bones were almost completely bleached out and I thought I might find a use for them.

Especially the thick leg and hip bones, the girl wants a club made from a femur, not sure on the authenticity of that but I think I could come up with something, she also found a cash of turkey feathers in a hollow tree, not sure what would have stashed them there.

I think i have reached the limits of my patience and ability without some hands on instruction from someone that knows what they are about. I have used a borrowed kit made of copper, but I feel like it is time to make or buy my own. I really am not very good and my finished rock looks like one of nic's preforms .

I have tried making chainmail armor and got frustrated and bored, I tried making bows and could never seem to get it right without the wood warping, I tried making arrow shafts and ruined a bunch of turkey feathers.

I dunno what it is but I feel this pull or need to do something with my hands to make something that my ancestors may have made but i lack the skill and knowledge.

Thanks for listening to me ramble.

Jay, don`t get discouraged. Just startin` out in primitive skills can and will have you walkin` around in little circles, mumblin` to yourself. Even after you have been into a long time, it still happens some. Just hang in there, practice, and things will start to fall in place. I`ve been doin` this mess for 20 years, and still get humbled ever once in a while.

I`ll be makin` a couple of knives toward the end of the week. When I do, I`ll take a few shots of the antler handle and the haftin` process as I go along. I`ll send you a PM with the link when I do.

Ahhh, where to start?
There is a ton of info on the internet these days for primitive skills, some of it grade A knowledge. Search on google for whatever you want to know.

As for Antler, geez, there is so many different ways to attach something. Modern or Primitive hafting? Primitive you fit as best as possible, and then I use hide glue and sinew. Good luck using the hooves, they take forever to grind, I just use hide scrapings from rawhide, and then melt it all down in a crock pot. Dip the beatin sinew in and then wrap. Then you cover the sinew/hide glue in pine pitch, then you can cover that in a leather wrap (talkin about the handle here).

You can find all the above stuff at primitve archey stores online, etc. Such as, 3 river archery, crazy crow trading post, Kings Custom, ......ahh I forgot all the others, just google it.

If you want to do something cool with the femur, bust it into pieces and carve out arrowheads from the compact bone. Try making two long grooves on the sides of the femur, THEN take a long flat chisel, put the blade IN the groove, tap it with a hammer on a wooden table of sorts, and the femur will split in two large halves, but it takes some practice. But you can end up with a very long bone point, knife, fish spear, hair comb, whatever.

Don't leave those bones in the woods that long, the mice, etc. will eat it ALL.

Again, I wish I had a camera and I would post a pic of my bone arrowheads.

Bottom is a pic of the Modern Swiss Knife Company I work with now, part time. Blade show 2006.
