What is the Broadhead of choice when turkey hunting and where is the target zone or kill zone on a turkey

Here are some general guidelines as to shot placement. I'm not a turkey bowhunting expert. So I'm sure folks can elaborate better than me.

I do know that it's best to find a broadhead that gives you a pretty wide cut and will NOT pass through. It's not like deer hunting. You want the arrow to stay in the bird if you can. I've also heard that you may want to go with a 125 or 150 grain arrow for more knock down power. You're not going to be shooting 30 or 40 yards. So you don't need an arrow that will shoot flat out that far.

The Rocket Tom-O-Hawk

3 1/2" cut 150gr. they will cut a whole as big as a softball in them.

I am three for three with them. Ideal shot is the texas heart shot or the butt of the wing. I like the wing because if i hit the wing there is no chance that the turkey will leave flying.

I was reading in GON last night that people put a Treble hook with one hook removed to act as an arrow stopper. Does anyone do that or is that really necessary

Hey Joe,

I have always had good results with a shot to the hip joint. It is high and back on a turkey. If you have access to a mounted turkey, run your hand up his leg until you locate the hip joint. Of course this, like other shots can be difficult to locate depending on the bird's position. I like the Rocket broadheads an the Gobbler Guillotine (Not sure about spelling that one) is awesome. It has a 4" cutting diameter. It is made for shooting the bird in the head and will absolutely take it off. It won't work with an overdraw though. I like a head shot, simply for the fact that, if you hit him he's down right there and if you miss, you might get another shot but at the very worst case, the bird doesn't go off somewhere and die where you can't find him.

Good Luck
