Thats a decent location for a buck.It will probably be crowded though. It should not be hard to find deer anywhere on the wma.My experience from past hunts is to hunt the fields.I have never hunted the first hunt and dont no how the buck movement will be around the fields.

Most of the WMA is very good for seeing deer, if you're after a really good buck, they are there but it will take a little more scouting. I know of several good bucks that were killed there in shall we say, very obvious locations! That is to say, the successful hunter didn't walk a long way to get to his stand. That said, the fields are good for seeing deer, but they are also very popular with hunters. I was the biologist for that WMA for almost six years, so I am very familiar with it. In my experience, most of the deer are taken in the area that includes the check station (AREA 4), but that you have as good a chance to see deer in any area. AREA 4 includes the dove field, which has about 50 acres of winter wheat planted, which accounts for the popularity of that particular spot. The crowded places change from year to year as people get 'hot tips' so it's hard to say which will be the congregation area this year. Wherever you go, take a good pair of binocs and look at each deer carefully, it's easy to nail a spike for a doe, especially on those foggy mornings. In fact, when I worked the check station, I could almost guarantee at least one 'illegal' buck every time it was foggy or misty in the morning. And before you ask how to tell if the buck meets the minimums, if you have to think about it, it probably doesn't. I'd wait for the one that really gets your attention, believe me, they are there! Stop by the check station and talk to the area manager and tell him I sent you. He does a super job managing the WMA and he'll help you any way he can. Good luck and good hunting!

Thanks to all for info...This WMA is indeed unique...To bad it takes a
double rejection to draw....
I have been 2 weekends so far during archery, just to scout and saw 4
does, and 1 " marginal" buck...I am looking forward for the actual "hunt dates", it does not really matter if I kill a deer...I have been hunting 20 plus
years and just enjoy the experience of a "unique hunt" area that is not overly
crowded and offers a special opportunity to view different new land and an
area that is managed for quality deer....
This is all Gods country....We should enjoy , no matter where or when...He gives us all only so many days ...So we should enjoy each sunrise...and sunset....

Yeah look real careful at them deer on doe days.I shot an illegal buck on JK a few years back on one of them foggy mornings.Had 1 little spike it cost me $250.On the hunt I was on year before last all but 1 of the bucks killed was on a field, but I was on the second hunt and they were chasing does.

7mag,

My Father and I will be there for the same hunt, 10/27-30. I'm a newbie to the Joe Kurz WMA myself. Never been there before. I was hoping we could go a day early to scout, but so far my work schedule will prevent that :( . Even so, I'm still looking forward to the hunt. From the above posts it sounds like we should all have a great time. :)

Maybe the cool weather will hold and start the rutting activity early. :bounce:

I hope to go back 1-2 more times before the hunt to scout some more...I went this last weekend and saw lots of interesting areas...Did not see any
bad places, but I typically like to hunt the thickest places I can find close to
swamps(water) and some type edge....Look me up while you are there I will
be in old GMC 4WD (tan/brown) with small white camper....

Thanx Ga Dawg,

I already found that area, and it will likely account for 1 days hunt !!!!!
Maybe 2.....

I never have had the patience to do it myself, but get up there late or stay up there.went in early inthe afternoon to put up a lock on for my wife, she won't use a climber.About 12:15 in the back right corner of the first field on the left off the paved road from Gay there was a 16 or 17 inch 10 pointer 40yrds from the woods feeding.he raised his head as we pulled the truck in and walked quickly over the hill further into the field, not into the woods.the field was only waist high at the time and the woods were so thick you had to beat your way in!!!Two guys were napping in their blue Toyota near the paved road with their feet sticking out the tailgate and the buck bedded about 70 yds from them.I tryed an open country spot and stalk type hunt on him,but we all know that only works on TV........Anyway plenty of people will be dissapointed in their location the first morning and get down to scout about 10:30,Be there then........

You guys gotta quit!
It's still 3.5 weeks until we get there and I'm already ready to go right now.

I was looking at GON's rut forcast and it is Nov. 8 for Kurz. Sounds like we're in for a great hunt during the late pre-rut / early rut ...
