Other than the obvious reason for neutering, are there other advantages/reasons to have it done? I have a rescue dog that's about 1 1/2 years old. The vet recommended neutering and I had an appointment to get it done about 6 months ago. Something came up and I never got it done. I keep getting reminders from the vet about scheduling it, but I wonder if it's really necessary. He's kept up in an electric fence and all of the other dogs in the neighborhood are kept up 99% of the time so the odds of him impregnating another dog is slim. Also, can a dog be too old for neutering?
Thanks for the advice...........

My dog didn't get neutered until he was around 9 years old, but that was because he had a prostate problem. Some dogs there is little change, others gain weight and get lethargic. Just depends on the dog.

I agree with DAWG2, With a few exceptions, Some breeds tend to get fat, & loose the want to, I have always gone by a few things to lead me in the right direction, Does he hunt like I want him too?? If yes, then leave him B!!,Is he papered?? If yes to both questions, LEAVE HIM ALONE!!If you may want him back one day or are females available that you want to put him in with? Leave him be!!! Is it detrimental to his life!! Have him cut!!
Are you a bunny huggin freak, that believes everything you're told by someone trying to get their way?? Do what you're gonna do anyway!!!

Neuter him,
it wont hurt anything, he wont get fat and he will be protected from testicular cancer and prostate problems.
7 of my nine bird dogs are neutered none are fat, all are excellent hunters, they were neutered at around 4 years of age.

It helps prevent prostate issues and also, if you neuter him...... you will not have to worry bout him roaming the neighborhood when some other dog is in heat. Trust me, if he is fully intact...... no fence is going to keep him away from a nice female down the street that is in season.

is it worse to neuter later in life? (around 4-5 years old) we've got an outside dog (lab mix) that sort of roams the property as he wishes (never runs off, he knows where he's fed :) ) ... i'm just worried if we get him in the car, and to the vet, he'll be terrified of going anywhere with us again!
