I am thinking about getting a traditional black powder rifle but I have to wonder how much it cost to shoot one of these? I am thinking I would like to go flint and round ball other than the intial setup how much would it cost me per shot? Also what about the maintaince with these things how bad is it? Thanks, Aaron.

Oh man, that is an extremely hard question to answer. I applaud your decision to go flint. I got a cheaper one to see how I would like it and now me and my son prefer it.

You have an idea on which rifle you would like? You can spend anywhere from a couple hundred to several thousand. The Lyman Great Plains is a good choice for only a few hundred. I have a Traditions Deerhunter which is even cheaper BUT you can tell it.

Powder ran me $20 per can at BPS last time I got some and the balls are about $12 per 100 as well. It aint near as cheap as it used to be thats for sure but even at all that it is still much cheaper than conventional I think.

There are things you need, like a measure and a flask and you can get them not so expensive and plastic or you can make them or you can get expensive.

Look around locally to see what they got and check out Midway and Track of the Wolf and Dixie Gun Works before you buy stuff. I'm sure others will come in with some awesome ideas as well.

Good luck and if ya get round my way give a shot we can go shoot anytime.

I have a traditional percussion cap .54 Hawken by Thompson but I want to go to flintlocks.

If you are going to go traditional, go .50 caliper, I LOVE my .54 but it is harder to find things for it.

If you are going to go tradtional, best recommendation would be to buy or make a shooters bag strictly for your BP.

To get started you are looking at obviously the rifle

You also want balls, powder, wadding, lube, spare flints, measures, and a powder horn if you want to go really tradtional.

Once you get the initial setup, it is fairly inexpensive to shoot.

15.00 for a box of 100 lead balls
20-25 for a 1 lb bottle of powder
5-10 for wadding patches
5-10 for bore lube

I am not really sure what spare flints run but I dont think they would be outragiously expensive, and a flint should last you a while.

so all in all, once you have all of the equipment, for about $50-60 you should have enough stuff to run 100 rounds at the range. much cheaper than cartridges.

Bobab if he gonna go traditional he gonna have to order them thar balls just about anyhow so any caliber would be fine dont ya think? I know the local places dont have true black powder or balls so I have to order them or make a trip to BPS and they believe their powder is made from gold....oh and you are just about spot on on the cost there, I got $48 using two flints at 70 grain loads, and pre lubed patches. I understand that the best lube tho is a water soluable cuttin oil and not those prelubed patches or even bore butter on your own patches. I gots three four packs o them prelubed monstrosities to use up or give away...
