The ballistics show a drop of about 5" at 100yds if I'm sighted in .50" high at 25yds. Based on that, there wouldn't be much holdover, although I haven't actually shot it at 100yds.

How much velocity would you lose at that range?

id be sure to practice at 100 yards before i tried to take a deer at that distance. not just to figure out hold-over,but to see if i could even hold a group.

With a good rest I feel confident at 100yds. :rolleyes: Offhand? No way. As far as velocity and energy go, at 100yds it still has 760ft./lbs of energy at 1068 ft/sec.

Elmer Keith shot a mule deer at 600 yds with a 44Mag. I believe it was 2 out 6 shots.

There's no way that can be right. Just yesterday I was looking at a freedom arms 44 at the local gun store, I ask the counter guy how it shoots and he tells me that it had ZERO yes ZERO drop out to 100 yards. :eek:

Sight in at 100 yards to be dead on. At about 50 yards you should be about 1.5 inches high. At 150 yards your drop should be around 6 inches. If you plan to shoot past 100 yards you should either reload your own or use Buffalo Bore or Garrett ammo. I would not shoot anything out past 150 yards with a 44 in a revolver as you will lose energy really fast past that point. Remember still, that placement is key. Whitetails are thin skinned and thin boned and it doesn't take a lot to penetrate all the way through. Bigger than whitetails I would follow the load your own or use Buffalo Bore or Garrett ammo rule. Also, practice, practice, practice and then practice some more. Make sure you know where you lose accuracy with and without a rest and then use those limits. Just because the bullet can perform out past 100 yards does not me you can.

Yes it will kill a deer at 100 yards. I have shot one at 93 yards and it was a Bang-flop.

I will agree with the others though that you MUST practice with it out to 100 yards if you plan on shooting that far. Not just to figure out the drop but to understand what a target looks like through the sights at 100 yards.
Your group at 25 yards will tell you nothing about how you will shoot at 100. All it will tell you is the potential that your gun has.

Also, shooting benched (or rested) versus shooting offhand will change your point of impact as well. Sometimes it is significant. As is how you grip the gun.

My advise is limit yourself to 50 yards until you have time to practice at 100.

This past Sunday, I shot spike at 40 yds measured with a 200 gr JHP Hornady and it dropped where it stood. I wouldn't use such a heavy bullet. I'd use either the 200 grain or 240 grain at most.
