I'm late but I'm here, went this morning and tried to find that special tree, but couldnt find it. I know there are birds there but they were not gobbling this morning. I hunt in Berrien county mostly. I've got about 200 acres beside the house with a few birds scattered around and got the hunting club with around 3,200 acres thats only 20 miles from the house. Both places are in Berrien county. My son saw 32 turkeys in one flock back during deer season. A few weeks ago one of the other members that don't turkey hunt heard "several birds gobbling" while he was squirrel hunting. Man I cant hardly wait for this work week to go by. I also slip over to Bullard Creek WMA every now and then.

Hey guys, sorry it has taken me so long to get to ya'll. I'm in school in Athens, but don't let that fool you, I will hunt EVERY single day I can....and a lot during the week. I'll be hunting Worth, Wilcox, Lee, Washington, and Brooks Counties. I'll also do a bunch of huntin on Redlands, since it's only about 25 min. from my apt. here in Athens.
I've been hearing alot of gobblin down south, especially on our farms in Wilcox and Worth. I went out and listened wednesday morning in Wilcox and heard 7 big boys and a jake. I heard atleast 125 gobbles. They were tearing it up!
Gut Pile....I keep thinkin that I read somewhere on here where you said you were in school at GCSU? If so, we ought to try to meet up one morning and do a little public land huntin.

Well guys, this might be my last post before opening morning. I'm headed south tomorrow afternoon after my last test. Friday morning I'm gonna get up and listen out at a farm in Worth county, head to my buddies wedding rehearsal, get some sleep, hit up the woods saturday morning, wedding saturday night, sleep off the wedding, get up Sunday morning head out to either our farm in Wilcox county or Worth, which ever one tickles my fancy, drive back to Athens sunday night, get some sleep, and then try my luck with a public land bird monday morning. It's gonna be a long few days, but hopefully once it's all said and done I will have laid down a few longbeards. Good luck to ya'll this weekend, let's get on the board with a few nice birds. I'll try to keep ya'll updated via the BlackBerry, but we'll see how that goes. Again good luck, and go smash some heads

Had a immature 2 yr old at 30 yards this morning and didn't shoot him. :banginghe: The guy I was with this morning had roosted a big bird in this area last night so we were waiting on him. Didn't work out though. The bird I had at 30 yards probably had a 6" beard, his brother got shot yesterday by my buddies wife (16lbs 6" & 4" beard) and 1/2" spurs. Also got on another bird this afternoon around 11 who gobbled once about 150 yards away after I cut at him and we walked about 50 yards and stopped to set up and there him and his buddy were standing 50 yards from us and saw us and walked off. :banginghe: I'll get one soon guys. Just got to make it all happen. Best of luck

Good luck and do us proud. I had one at about 40 or 50 yards Gobbling like a fool in some thick bushes. He had a hen with him and wouldnt come in. I purred and clucked lightly and got the hen headed my way. I thought for sure he would follow her and give me a shot. WRONG!!! the hen came into sight and to about 15 yards. He stayed back and kept gobbling. The hen finally got tired of playing and they left together. I tried to stay with them but they flew across the creek onto someone elses land. I will be abel togo in the afternoons but it will be the weekend before I can go in the morning again. Can't wait.

I sure hope those rascals start acting like they are supposed to. They didn't talk hardly at all this weekend. I called in 7 jakes saturday morning, all of which gobbled at one time at 20 feet, but they were the only birds that said anything once they hit the dirt. Sunday, I went to a farm that just 8 days earlier I had heard 152 gobbles before 9 o'clock, and didn't hear a peep. I mean zero, zilch, nada. Did manage to call a bird in to about 50 yards, but since the dang thing didn't gobble I didn't know he was there and spooked him off when I got up. Today BIGRNYRS and I went to one of his clubs and I called up a MONSTER. But he was the only one that would gobble, and he only did that about 8-10 times. He stayed about 75 yards out struttin his stuff until the hen that had been cussing us out of about 5 minutes walked right up to him and took him away.
I really don't think they are quite ready yet. What about you guys? Did ya'll hear a decent amount of birds gobble on the ground this weekend?
hotamighty
03-23-2009, 08:09 PM
I heard 4 different birds gobble Sun. morning. One only gobbled one time. The other three gobbled about twenty or more times. Two of the three went off of the club and the other one had the hen with him.

I'm thinkin about trying the same thing....just not sure if I wanna get soaked. I've hunted everday since the season started and I'm beat....these public land birds are givin me a run for my money. I hunted private land saturday thru monday, and was so close on sat and mon, but just couldn't close the deal. These week days are frustrating, Redlands is a hard place to hunt. I can't wait for the weekends, barely hunted private land birds are my favorite!

Well I got wet!!!!!!! Almost closed the deal on a good bird..About 7:30 I had 3 gobbling 1 way and 1 the other..They were lighting up the woods...I got in between them..Same place I killed a bird last year..Was a hen close by in a tree calling also...She flys down toward the one bird...This drives the other 3 crazy..So I let em have it with some calling and See them coming, strutting along a big ridge across he creek from me..Then I hear some coarse yelps coming from my right and know right away it jakes..These other 3 longbeards are going crazy at the jakes cause they cant see em...Well they start down off the ridge and see these 5 jakes where I am and they turn and leave...DANGIT!!!! So I haul tail way around and cut once and sure enough one gobbles..I get ready..Here they come up the rd BUT they hit some thick pines about 80 yards out and are gone again..I set there another 45 min hoping they would show back up..It was coming a monsoon!!! Anyhow,I hardly ever carry a decoy but as open as the woods still are here..I think I might have sealed the deal if I had one this morning! I came in to change cloths and am fixin to hit it again now that the rain has let up!!

Yea, it's on the other side of Albany. There are a lot of birds out there. If you get in the right spots you can get on birds fairly easy. Just gotta know where those spots are. Let me know if you decide to get down there before the season ends. I would be willing to meet up with you and show you some good spots and help out a teammate.

I was on a few bird birds all week but they were all henned up. Going to get back after them this week as much as I can. Will have to hunt afternoons on MWF but will be able to get to hunt on Tues and Thurs after my class ends at 9. Could be deadly if I can strike one up late morning. I'm also going to Kentucky for the opening up there the 18th of April. My dads buddy counted 18 long beards from his stand one morning in November!!! Management Advantage also filmed a turkey hunt on this property 2 years ago. Hope to connect on a bird up there as well!

Well guys After a long week of work I finally got to get in the woods but it just made the week longer because I tried working some birds that wasnt on my property and they werent in to it. Monday I had 4 gobbling accross the creek about 400 yds away not on my property so I set on the creek trying to call them in but after a couple of hours I heard two shots accross the field so I guess those birds were history. That afternoon I roosted some birds and went back this morning and got set up. When it broke daylight I could see two roosted about 100 yds out over top the creek. I cut and got two hens fired up and wouldnt you know it they flew right back into that field accross the creek. Man Im baffled. I really really want to take another Gobbler!! Maybe the next couple of weeks will be promising! Im not going to quit trying fellas. I promise!! I want one to eat just as bad as I want one for the team!

Heard em this weekend, saw em this weekend, called em in this weekend....but have nothing to show for it. I took the little brother trying to get his first bird. Saturday about 11:30 a few finally broke free from the hens to come on in. It was 2 jakes and a maybe 2 yr old/ maybe jake. They come strolling in to about 15 yards and the little guy missed em. At 15 yards you might as well had been shooting a .270 at them with the size of that pattern. But o well, we had fun. I'll be back after them this week and weekend. I'm heading to Cedar Creek wednesday and then over to Tifton on friday and then over to Blakely on saturday. I'm getting tired of all this travel, so hopefully I will have something to show for it.

My son and I went this AM to what I thought was the best spot on the club. We didnt here anything so around 7:30 we went to another spot and heard one gobble as soon as we stepped out of the truck. We set up and after an hour and a half we hadnt seen or heard nothing else. We went to a big field (about 200 acres) and there were about 10 birds in the middle. I set out the decoys and did a little light calling and nothing. They didnt pay any attention to us at all. We picked up and drove through the woods and down the highway and walked about 400 yards through the woods to the other end of the field. Just as we got to the corner I saw a bird through the bushes heading our way down the edge of the field. my son and I stood shoulder to shoulder aiming into the field waiting. After about two minutes a Jake walked into sight. Then another. Then another. There were about 10 jakes and not a single long beard or hen in the bunch. I figured after all the walking, and this being the only legal bird I've had in gun range this year , IT WAS TIME. We each picked out a bird and did the 1,2,3 countdown. BOOM!!! Two birds fell right there and another one went down about 30 yards later. We are not sure who got the third one. He was an accident but he will eat just as good. I know he was a jake but I just couldnt help myself. Hope yall understand. I'llput some pics up after while. Was wondering too if I should enter him in the challenge. I took pics in case yall say go ahead. Let me know what yall think. Sorry for the long read.

Thanks guys. That was by far the best hunt I have ever been on. For my son and I to both get a bird at the same time is one of those times in the woods that makes it all worth it. Maybe we can all get a big one now that the ice is broke.

Okay well I've been on this same bird for the past two weeks. Had him at 80 yards coming to me yesterday when two hens came and grabbed him up and took him the other way :banginghe: It's become personal now. I had to leave at 5:00 today after watching 5:00 hens in the field and waiting on him. The landowner called me at 7:00 and told me two longbeards were strutting 50 yards from where I was sat up. I'm leaving for kentucky friday and hunting saturday sunday and monday morning. Hope to connect there if not I'll be back after this GA bird tuesday.

I saw one strutting in a field where I have permission to hunt Thursday morning on my way to work. I almost called in sick but thought better of it. I hope he will be back there in the morning. I am going to take the bow and see if I can stick him. This will be the first time bowhunting anything and the first time shooting at a live target. I will have my partner from the pics standing by with the 12 guage just in case things dont go according to plan. Good luck this weekend guys.

Well guys, looks like the things have come together and I'm headed to Kansas late Wednesday night to kill me a gobblin Rio!! Gonna hunt half a day Thurs. and the rest of the weekend. According to guys that just left and the landowner, it was a good week for them. Everybody except one guy limited out. Because I am a poor college student I will only be able to take one bird, but heck, that's one more rio than I can kill here. Hopefully everything will come through and we will have a successful hunt!

Smoked one today guys. It has been a hard season and I am glad to FINALLY bust a head. Shot this bad boy on the hardest piece of ground to hunt, Redlands. He came in to me with one of his buddies. He was the strutter so he got it. I could get on the second one, he got the heck out of dodge when I shot. The shot was a little farther than I thought. They wouldn't come any closer so I had to take what I could get. I guessed him for 35, but he was 46. Just a 2 yr. old, 9 7/8 inch beard, 7/8 inch spurs. But he's 7 points!!

Well here is the story,
Me and dwills arrived in Kansas around lunch on Thursday. After chatting it up with the landowner/guide, we hit the roads to glass for birds in the fields. We glassed several groups and finally found some we thought we could work with. They were so henned up it wasn't even funny. I had a MAN at about 60 but his hens decided they would go the other way. After roosting a few birds we headed back for a brew and some dinner. Friday morning the birds we roosted flew down the other way. We hunted hard all day and saw a TON of birds but they were all henned up. Every single tom we saw had at least 6-8 hens with him. Late Friday, we rode trying to find a few birds to roost and saw a group close to a big brush pile that we thought we might could get on. There was an old abandoned house between the road and the birds, we snuck up to the house, got in it and watched them for a few minutes. There was an old brush pile in between us and the birds. We eased out of the house and up to the brush pile. A few soft clucks later he wandered into about 40 yards. I dropped the hammer and he flopped. I was jacked. I had my first Rio! Saturday morning we headed to another field where we saw birds the night before. That morning 52 birds flew down into the field. 7 strutters, 3 jakes, and 42 hens. 2 hrs. later, dwills had a good one on the ground. We hunted the rest of the day out of the Double Bull trying to get dwills a bird with his bow. Although we saw toms, the only birds that came to check out she mobile and our calls were a group of hens. We hunted shortly Sunday morning and then made the 17 hr drive back to GA. It was a great time and we can't wait to go after some more Rio's next year.

It wouldnt hurt my feelings if we keep the same teams next year (if there is a turkey challenge next year). I guess now that turkey season is over it is time to hit the water and catch the biggun. Good luck over the summer and be safe. Cant wait till Sept.
