Have you all been hearing any birds? I went to two private spots this morning. Had two gobbling on one tract and 1 on another tract. I'm going to try to put the first on in the bag on private land next weekend. Then, I'll be hunting some wma's for the extra pts.

How do we go about getting our team name?
I was wondering the same thing. I'll ask one of my buds since he was in this thing last year and I see their team has a name now for this year.
Guess, I'm going to get up and go listen in the morning and make sure those two birds are still roosting in the same place they were in last Sun morning.
Might ride over to a wma and look for sign tomorrow. We had 4 birds put it on us last year over there and I'd like to get a little revenge on at least one of them this year.

I will be by myself sat morning, but I hope that I can get a kill on video. I sat up several times last year, but no luck. Don't take the camera and kill two and had several chances last year hunting with my buds. But, it never failed that they'd kill one if I didn't have the video cam. Hope this year is better. I would love to get some on video.
I also wonder how many shots I'll hear in the morning. One of my places has been too quiet this year so I'm thinking somebody has already started early nearby.

Just got back from a wma and saw a big gobbler. He wasn't hanging around so I couldn't tell about his beard, but I'll be back after him tomorrow around lunch. Saw some sign there, but nothing like it was last year. Did see where one was strutting near the same place I chased them around last year.
Don't know what the weather is going to do to them in the morning. The sun just came out here in the last 30 minutes. Maybe we'll all get one in the morning.
Good luck to everyone.

Well, they call it "hunting" right? Had two walk by me at 15 ft this morning with those long beards hanging and couldn't get a shot. I'll try those in the morning and set up different on them. They were roosted in a different place this morning. The woods I'm hunting them in are thick so it's going to be tough.
Anyway, I will be heading to a local wma in a few to see if I can run up with that bird I saw yesterday.
Check back in with you all this evening.

Missed one yesterday evening. Shot over his head or either he ducked right when I pulled the trigger. 20 yds is tough with a tight pattern. He was coming in for a hen decoy that I had in the breeding position. Couldn't believe I missed him, but that's the closest one I've shot at.
Didn't hear a thing this morning except a guy calling on the property next to me. His gobble call was the only thing I heard that even resembled a gobble.
Will try again this evening.

I got to the other side and set up. I called.. he gobbeled one time.....that was it. He was inside 100 yds by the sound.... Nadda. Seems they just ain't right up here yet. Man I love getting me arse kicked by birds...lolo

Nothing this morning. Dead silent. Went to a wma this afternoon and saw one hen so I messed with her for a few mins and had her 15 feet from me at one time. Had one answer 3x in a row at 8 this a.m.. Set up on a log road he was supposed to come down and he got quiet, a few minutes later, 2 dogs came out where he had last gobbled. I took my mask down and was telling on of my buds how sick of dogs I was when I looked to my right and he was coming out of strut looking at me. He went back down the hill and gobbled 5x more about an hour later. The wind picked up strong so I left. Gonna try him after lunch if the winds will lay.

I hear ya. Me and one of my buds were coming back from a wma this evening and saw 6 in a field right before dark. We pulled over and messed with them for a few minutes. One was in full strut almost the whole time. They gobbled their heads off for about 10 minutes. Then flew up to roost. I'm trying to find out who owns the field to see if we can get permission to hunt it.
I'm going back to a wma in the morning to a spot where I saw a gobbler last sat at lunch and see what happens. I'm off til Monday so it should be a lot of hunting time on my hands.

Well, one tract of my private land is officially underwater now. The other two only have about half dry land. I started to a wma this afternoon and the dirt road to it was completely underwater as far as I could see. It so it isn't looking good for this weekend over here. Think I'm going to bring out the chest waders.... I actually did put them on yesterday to get my popup blind out of the creek. It was in water and would have probably been several feet deep by today with all the rain we got. I even got bogged down and had to winch out... decided to go home after that.

Yep we are under water up here bad!!! I was at walmart last night and I couldn't believe all the Turkeys there,,,, They were in line to check out... everyone of them had a pair of swimfins and a snorkle lolo
I got two choices.... hope the high ground isn't under water in the swamps...I'm sure a bunch is and hunt those new "islands" if I can get to them. The birds will be holed up on them no doubt, just have to sneek on to the right one and it should be game on. Or #2 switch tactics and start hunting the high ground with 90% of the idiots:mad:

Our birds are in a lull right now. Nobody hearing or seeing any. The weather has to be clear for a few days here before the birds start gobbling heavy again, not kidding. These are the most finicky birds on earth and they are driving me nuts. I think there kin to white perch. Maybe mid April will be better. Don't give up on me yet though, I usually scratch a few out late april and maybe I'll get a few bonus pts. with a long beard from Mo. on opener up there.

Heard one this morning WAAYYY off. Sabrina and I started moving towards him. We got what I figured was about 1/2 way and I tried to make him scream again to close in on his location. When I cutt another screamed at us inside 100 yds!!! we dropped down and started working the bird. Over 25 min he gobbeled 5 or 6 times, his hens got FIRED UP. I thought we were gonna pull them and he would follow. All I did was cluck and purr. His 3 or 4 girlfriends did not like it!! LOLO They fed off to our left never presenting a shot. We made a move to circle and get in front of the group to no avail.. It seems after this weekend they are starting to get a bit better, more folks have heard talking in the mornings but most are with the girls now it seems. It should get hot in a couple weeks when they start setting!!

slippin in known turkey areas, like deer hunting...then trying to call. If we don't strike we slip in close and shoot. Tough hunting but ya gotta do what ya gotta do! believe it or not Dillion missed another one last night:banginghe Bird was so close (6 steps) he just missed!!!
we saw 5 different gobblers yesterday all running without hens. 1 of which dilion missed from his blind setup. we also saw a bunch of solo and pairs of hens. no birds talking. The toms were unresponsive to any calling..they just looked and went back to feeding/scratching. Even when they were looking at live hens all around me...they wouldn't come??? I've seen plenty of jakes. Had 4 at 5yds yesterday evening and several hens, but no longbeard. We've been seeing longbeards. We just can't get on em. Looks like it's going to have to "bushwacking" time on the wmas. And, they just aren't gobbling here on the wmas don't know if it's pressure or hens. I know the weather hasn't helped and the birds we're seeing are with hens so maybe it'll change soon.
I'll be out there in the morning on private land first thing. I saw where a gobbler was heading that way or at least he left his tracks pointed in that direction. The creek finally receded to bank level so I can get back in there.

Maybe in some folks opnion, But I did get in close enough for an "iffy"shot. Most folks would have never found a way to the bird, I had to cross about 75 yds of knee/thigh deep water before I got to the creek. Then I had to find a way across that....They would have just left cause they didn't want to get wet. I also believe most would have taken the shot as well. Turkey hunting...ya have to do what it takes to get it done..I will try my best Its all about the thrill of the hunt... You know it got kinda "intense"
That bird was on a strech of land not 30 yds wide in most places. But it was long. I would guess most of it has just come out from underwater in the last 2 days or so. They are moving back into the creek bottoms as the waters are just now starting to recede.
Gee I just gave out some info......oopppps:rofl:

Dude I was way over waders today. I just wear jungle boots. It's not cold any more and the waders will restrict my movement. I do wear um when it is cold though

I'll be glad when all this water goes down. One tract on a wma we normally hunt has been under water since all this rain. I just hope it drains soon. But, it has pushed the birds out to the hills on the big tract. We are just having a tough time getting some in the bag. The place we hunted Fri afternoon and Sat morning showed good sign, but they are still henned up. It was an adventure to try to drive down some of the roads. Washouts all over the place. I had to get out and guide georgia_hunter across several sections to keep his truck from falling in the ruts and bottoming out.
Anyway, I've got to pull a 13.5hr day tomorrow and Tuesday so I'd better get to bed.

Heading to Mo. in the morning. Gonna scout in the rain Sat eve and Sunday. Gonna be beautiful weather for the opening week according to the weatherman. Maybe I will be lucky enough to get us a big bearded tom. Long spurs are pretty rare in the rocky ozarks but 11" beards common. I'll check back in Thursday hopefully with good news. Good luck to all.

I had my son last weekend so I didn't get much accomplished. Thought I had one in the bag last Sat morning. Dang bird was gobbling, but when he finally came to me it was a jake so I passed.
Me and two of my friends have a quota hunt at Griffin Ridge starting Sat morning so I'm hoping it'll pay off. I'm also planning on going in the morning now that the weather has settled down.
Yall posting pics of all those birds is making me sick...
Maybe I'll get at least one on the board. This has been a bad year for me. Just not seeing the birds that I need. If things don't change, I might have to take a wma jake for 4pts. I just hope it doesn't come to that.
Well, I just wanted you all to know that I'm still alive and hunting. I'll post some more this weekend.
Stan: looks like I might have to use your guide service to locate me a bird... now that you've got your birds :D

Got back in late wednesday night. We had a great hunt and trip. Birds were really going. Me and a great pal called up two big toms opening morning within 15 yds. 1,2, boom, click! His gun misfired. I got a 18.5 lb, 11", 1 1/16" Mo public tom. Not but one strand reached 11". the majority were 10.75", so he is another 5pt bird. We killed 5 and had a misfire between 6 groups of 2 hunters in three days. Not great but not bad. Here are a few pics.I did not get a pic of the 5th bird because my friend had loaded up and headed home by the time I got to the camp wednesday. The lake looks close but it is actually over 200' below. Out of the 5 birds here are the beard lengths, 11", 11" & 6", 11.25" & 8" & 5", 10", and another 11". The birds ranged from 17 to 22.5 lbs. Those birds up there are awesome. The last night we had fried turkey, peas, cornbread, biscuits, rice and gravy, and broccolli and cheese and beverage of choice. It was a great time I will always remember!

Got on a good one saturday. He did not want to gobble but another tom was blowing it out and made this old tom gobble 10 or 12 times. I slipped within 100 yds of roost and sat down and gave a few soft clucks and yelps and he hammered. He finally flew down at 7 and all got spooky quiet. I was in some mature pine timber that had thick undergrowth and some Katrina tops in it. At 7:30 I think I see a red bird to my left but it was his big ole sly butt standing perfectly still at 30 yds. He was in some privet hedge just looking like an old buck. After 5 minutes of no hen sighting, he walked back down the hill. I got out of there quietly and went back yesterday morning to hear only crows. We close friday at sunset and I plan on going there everyday so maybe I can scratch another one out.

Was blessed again this morning with a jam up hunt with a great outcome. Killed this 16.5 lb, 15/16" spur,10.75" thick bearded tom in some hilly pines this morning. He is not the bird I started out after but he is a great way to end the season here in Ms. in my opinion. If we can get two more birds, we may have a shot at this thing. God Bless and good luck!

Well guys, I guess I've let our team down. I've tried to kill at least one, but it just wasn't a good year for me. Had a bunch of jakes and maybe I should have shot a couple on the wma's to help us out, but I thought maybe I'd get lucky later in the season with some longbeards.
It's definitely been fun hunting and the time in the woods was definitely better than any work day I can think of.
I think this is a great contest and hope it continues.

Guys who killed a bird....congrats. I wish I could have helped y'all, but don't think that I wasn't in the woods. I spent many an aggravating hour out there, but just couldn't get a break. It just makes me feel bad to not enter at least one. Don't whip me too bad...:whip:
I felt so disgusted after turkey season that I decided to fire the boat up after 4 years and head to the coast last Saturday. Didn't do too dang good down there either except I found out that my boat still floats and took my son out on it for his first time. He was so pumped; he woke up Sunday morning and almost started crying because I wouldn't take him back that day. He loves the outdoors like me so I guess I'll have a partner.
I enjoyed it anyway and maybe we'll get to do this again next year. I've had fun just looking at what all transpired across the season. My thoughts is that a good day in the woods or on the water is way better than a good day at work.
