Jody, mine dont know rabbit season has ended yet:bounce:
I took my male puppy (Buck) out by his self Thursday afternoon and he jumped one right off the bat. He ran it good for about 45 minutes to an hour then it gave him the slip.
Im thinking I might start working these pups more by there self from time to time to get better on the checks instead of relying on another dog to pick it back up.

I ran mine this morning for a while behind my house, man they were sounding good for about 15 minutes and the rabbit must have disappeared, they never did pick him back up. Ive got two pups going and have been spending a lot of time with them, they have a little extra mouth but man they hunt hard and have good noses, maybe the mouthy part will get better, HOPEFULLY

Jody, or Chris, or anyone else for that matter, if you decide to run the dogs and want some company, I'm available most mornings. I sure would love to hear a good race or two.

1 time in the week and 1 time on the weekend. The grown dogs are resting and the young dogs are getting broke in this time of year.
Coonhunter, I can't leave them in the pen worrying about the snakes.I've had one bitten and 4 close calls myself.

Man your lucky, the last set of pups we had didn't want to bark a lick on track. I would say it is easier to get em to hush down a little than it is to make em open up.:hammers:

Jody i have been running the older hounds about once a week and have tried to run the new pups at least once and sometimes 2-3 times. Some days are good and some not so good but it is training.

I'm a rookie at rabbit huntin' with dogs.I enjoyed meeting some of y'all at the youth hunt last Feb. and I learned some there and some from hunting with Corey. I also learned how out-of-shape I myself am in.I think I need more running than my dog!
I appreciate threads like this one - good info!

I was able to get out and run yesterday, they did pretty
good had one real good run..Them baby rabbits were
driven them crazy thought, look's like this spot is going
to be ate up with rabbits next year if the varment's
don't get them all.
Was real proud of my young dogs, as we were coming out
we jumped 3 deer right dang in front of us..Some noses
were raised but none wanted any part in them, they
looked back at me like I know what you got for me if
I do :)

I went out saturday and monday while it was wet.I put down 1 grown dog and 7 young hounds. It was bump-bump on the small rabbits but they sure did pound on the big rabbits. As long as the ground is staying good and wet I'm getting some running time on the young ones.

You know what feel's good?? When your 13 month
old pup finally put's it all together and run's the crap
out of old Mr Cottontail. I took my Bluetick pup Willie
out last night for about 2 hour..It was the same old
story he would hunt for a few min and come back to
me, we never did jump a rabbit so I headed back to
the truck. We are walking down the road and he
started going crazy jumping around like a deer in the
tall grass. He has a real hot nose so I did not know
what he was doing, all of a sudden he let loose and
never stopped he ran that rabbit for about 45 min
when he finally lost him in some thick pine's..I was
so dang proud I called my brother in law & cousin so
they could hear him run.
This is what keeps me going..

Took the girls out this morning they hammered for over an hour and half before mr cottontail had enough and up and disappeared.
Think we are going to have rabbit 101 in the backyard with my young pups this afternoon. See what they think of San Juan Rabbits.
Good deal Corey, thats a special feeling when one runs their first rabbit.
