Dad and I arrived at our Heard county lease on Friday. I didn't hunt that morning but was set up on one of the few hardwood stands on the property that afternoon. The wind was blowing pretty hard all afternoon and knocking lots of acorns down all around me. The squirrels where having fits and knocked a few out themselves. Finally, about an hour and a half before dark, the wind died down to nothing. With the dry leaves covering the forest floor, you could hear anything moving from a long way off. It was just one of those evenings when you know you're going to see something -- it just "felt" right. Later, right as the sun dipped below the horizon, squirrels started raising cain up above me. I began scanning the woods and, sure enough, here comes two does feeding in my direction. When they got within about 50 yards, I quietly eared back the hammer on my T/C Hawken. Just as the first was about to step into a spot allowing me a perfect shot opportunity, she stopped and snorted one time. Then the two deer turned and slowly walked back the way they came from.
Not thirty seconds after they departed, I heard something moving off behind me and to my left. I looked in that direction and saw deer legs moving up the ridge toward me. I eased into a better position when I soon saw a nice set of antlers. The buck stopped about sixty yards out and made a rub, then started feeding off away from me. I thought he was going to ease on out without ever offering me a shot when he suddenly turned and walked toward me! He soon stopped and began eating acorns about forty yards from my stand. It was then that I decided he was a "shooter" and took him.
He turned out to be a nice 15" wide 8 pointer with one kicker point. But to me, the really impressive feature of this buck was his body size. We don't have any good scales at camp, but everyone there agreed this deer would weigh well over 200 lbs. My back and legs will atest to that as they're still sore after the uphill drag Friday night.
Also, my Dad got his first deer of the season by harvesting a doe in my food plot Saturday afternoon and I was blessed with the opportunity to take a doe Sunday afternoon.
Just another great weekend in Heard county!
