HD Antenna

I have a question about a HD antenna for a camper. My dad hunts in Kathleen, GA. We have a satellite set up for his camper, but we are not able to pick up the local stations. That is fine most of the time, but it would be nice to watch some college football games on Saturdays. For Christmas, I am considering buying him one of those inside(or I guess outside), whichever works better, HD antennas to pick up locals. He has a flat screen HD tv. Would this work and do you any of you have any experience on which one is better?
Thanks for any input.

First, there is no such thing as an HD antenna. Simply put, that's a marketing gimmick to sell something. BUT in all likelihood they will have HD listed on the packaging and listing.

Second, the type of antenna you need will be dependent on how far away from the stations you are trying to receive and your surroundings. IE: trees, especially pine and structures.

Distance is calculated by line of sight, or as the crow flies, a straight line from and too.

Trees, especially soft woods such as pine and spruce absorb signals.

Those issues can be compensated by increasing the bandwidth (size) of the antenna, but only to a certain point.

There are several threads in this forum with a lot of good information.

Here's a couple of websites that may help too.

I install these professionally for my dish, home theatre business and the antennaweb.org site is what I rely on. It tells you which direction to aim it to and the strength of the signal.

I hunt on the Twiggs/Bleckley line about 15 miles from Kathleen, and tried every indoor antenna Best Buy and Radio Shack had, priced from $35 to $89. None of them would pull in all the local Macon channels. I then tried the Antennacraft® HBU33 High-VHF/UHF Antenna from Radio Shack, about $80, pointed it NW when I set it up, and get in every local Macon station, plus some Columbus stations and a few others I'm not sure where they come from. Radio Shack also carries a 5 and 10 foot pole. I got one of each, put the together, and just stuck it up beside the camper. Works great!
