Customsawing.com make kits with the wood in rough state, some cutting and forming is required. I just ordered one it looks like it will be about 50% as hard to built as a scracth built one. $25 makes 4 calls

First, you need to decide if you want to make a "sawed and glued" or a one piece hewn out box calls.
There are numerous good woods to use, walnut, butternut, mahogany, poplar, & cedar, just to name a few of the more popular woods.

The Custom Sawing kit is a good way to start. you get everything you need to make 3 or 4 calls.
Once you see how everything works than you can go from there and order just the wood in bulk, springs, etc...
