I have another theory... If you can't participate in an activity that you enjoy then why not be a spectator.

I actually think the subordinate tom is just waiting his chance....waiting as close buy as possible. I once shot a tom out of a group of toms during a fall turkey hunt in NY. As soon as he started flopping another tom attacked him. The one I shot had behaved like the boss but "his buddies" were just waiting for the opportunity to eliminate their "brother". I think they are so instinctively programed to reproduce they stay as close to the hen (opportunity) as possible.

Contrary to popular opinion, it is not necessarily the dominant male that does the breeding. The hen determines when and with whom she will breed.
