Purple Martin

We 'found' a new spot for our south Alabama trip. Right behind the smaller of the two pitcher plant bogs is a public fishing lake. The manager at the lake likes birds and has several bluebird houses and at least 4 sets of purple martin gourds. The gourds are lower than typical (maybe 10 feet), and are RIGHT beside the boat ramps & fishing docks. So the martins are REALLY habituated to people, and when you stand back up the bank a ways with a long lens, they are less than 5 vertical feet over the lens!

Nikon D3, Nikkor 600 mm, f/5.6, 1/500th second, ISO 250, flash at ~- 2 1/3 with better beamer, cropped slightly for composition.
