This might seem like a stupid question, but why do people want you to sign up as a friend? I already am a friend to most of the people who ask me, so what is the deal?

It could just be posturing, showing everybody else how popular you are, or... it gives other folks a chance to see what kind of person you are, by the friends you have.
One advantage is it allows someone to go to their friends list and look at posts made by them quickly.
