I'm at the Firehouse working a timeswap today(not my normal station) and there is a flock of birds that frequent around this place. They are gobbling thier heads off. There were 3 I could see strutting in circles gobbling and a couple more off down the hill I could not see. It is enough to fire a man off........

OleRed15
03-21-2012, 06:39 PM
I have a question for yall...In the rules it says each team member can enter 3 birds but a 5 man team can enter only 12 birds...

Whats up with that? Shouldnt it be each team member gets to enter 3 birds for a team total of 15?

drewpatt
03-21-2012, 09:33 PM
The way its set up is a team can only enter 12 total but an individual can only enter 3 of that 12. I think it is to keep the competition closer. I think we should enter the first 12 mature gobblers we kill especially if they have a bonus point & hold off on the jakes

OleRed15
03-21-2012, 09:49 PM
Oh ok i understand. I agree that we should enter the first 12 gobblers we kill if we kill that many. 1 in the hand is better than 2 in the bush so lets take advantage of it. I wont kill any jakes regardless.

OleRed15
03-23-2012, 04:47 PM
Alright fellers its almost that time! Ill be up in Putnam on a buddies farm trying to double up, hoping the weather holds up...Where is everyone gonna be in the morning?

Good deal Unicoidawg, had a bad storm come through around 5 am I didn't hear a bird all morning. They were there last week, i'm hoping the weather had them messed up.

Unicoidawg
03-24-2012, 02:14 PM
Here are a couple of pics. He gobbled 7 times from the roost. I went in his direction and gave him a soft tree call and slowly walked to set up in a saddle below me. Not a minute or so after I sat down I hear something coming. I look up and all I can see is his white head bobbing up and down at about 60 yards. It is barely light, but I can see it is a mature bird. I dare not try to move on him because I'm out of position, so I let him pass on by. After he ges behind the hill I repostioned myself and let out a couple of soft clucks and yelps. Then I scratched the leaves and got ready. He was strutting and drumming, but I still could not see him. All of the sudden there he was just standing the all blowed up at 25 yards.I had to move again so when he went behind a big red oak I moved on him and took the shot when he walked out. He was 21lbs, had a 10 1/2 beard and 1 3/16 spurs.

I went again this morning and they were hammering hard. I'm off work for a few days.....lol. I passed on a group of 5 gobbling jakes this morning and had moved to another spot. I had another one hammering and was fixing to set up on him, then I got a phone call. My mom fell this morning and jacked her leg up pretty bad. We had her transported to the ER and are with her now. That ole bird was still hammering as I was walking away. I am gonna try again in a day or two when we get mom's situation figured out.

drewpatt
03-30-2012, 11:35 AM
Sorry to hear about your mom hope she gets well soon. The turkeys over here just barely gobbled I heard 4 from roost 1-3 times each & no ground gobbling. The one I shot did no roost gobbling & 4 ground gobbles, I was just able to get to him pretty quick.

03-30-2012, 12:38 PM
Congrats guys on some nice birds and the pics look good to me!

Had a close call this morning. Got on a 2 pretty hot birds this morning. Worked one for a hour before he broke and came into 30 yards. A jake was leading the way and got to within 20 ft of me and i saw another red head pop up behind some palmettos at 30 yards. Only problem was that i couldnt tell if it was another jake or the gobbler...I dont shot jakes so gave them the pass just out of caution. Gonna try them again in the morning and see if i cant set up in a better spot this time.

04-01-2012, 06:55 PM
They have really broke loose over this way the last 2 days. A buddy was hunting with me yesterday & we called up the twin to the one I killed but it came in on his side of the ridge we were on. I have 3 hot birds found & don't have to be at work until Thurs.

Well guys i hate to say this but...I missed a big ol bird this morning at 20 yards and im furious right now! This bird has hung up at 80 yards two times already and finally this morning i put B mobile out and he came right in and i missed him twice... Put that on top of a miss at 10 yards last year and im what you would call snake bit! I went from limiting out for many years in a row, to not being able to kill one if it got its beak stuck in the end of my barrel... Sorry if i wasted anyones time by reading this, im just venting!

Question...This bird is the king of this field and is in it every morning shortly after flydown, how long before you think he will be back and killable?

Unicoidawg
04-05-2012, 01:07 PM
Hate to hear that OR..... it happens to us all at some point or another. Don't get mad, just get even:shoot:. He'll be back give him a few days.

OleRed15
04-05-2012, 01:29 PM
Yea i thought hard about hanging it up for awhile but i cant let everyone on this team down and getting back on the horse after you fall is the right thing to do. So im headed out this afternoon to get on one of the other 4 i heard this morning since they roost in the same spot every morning.

So you really think he will be back in the field soon or did i push him off the field for good? Im thinking about trying it again sunday morning and my dad.

Unicoidawg

Well I got back in from a week of chasing them Missouri birds the other day. Man I tell ya what, those are some gobbling fools out there. We took 3 birds in the first two days. The first morning I called in a stud for my best friend, it was his first bird. It was 21lbs with 3 beards 11 1/4, 5 amd 4 1/2 inch beards with 1 inch spurs. The second day we set up on a another one trying for his second bird and the dang thing came in wrong and I took him. He was 21lbs with beard rot about 1/2 long and 1 spur 1 inch and the other was broke off. Then on the way back out of the woods we struck another one up and 45 mins later he took a dirt nap........ This was my buddies second day huntnig and his second bird, it was 20lbs with a 11 1/4 beard and 1 inch spurs. The rest of the week I heard birds, but could not connect on another. We had a great time and even saw a few of the famous Mark Twain National Forest wild horses...... that was pretty cool. Anyways I thought I'd give a update, I am done unless the wife decides she wants to give it another whirl one morning.

Anyone else still chasing them??

Hello guys. First off id like to say i had a great time with everyone in the challenge, this was my 3rd year and it was exciting sharing and reading about hunts and kills with you guys.

Second off I'd like to apologize for not holding up my end of the team and for not helping us do alittle better. I know this isnt all about winning a competition but in the end everyone would like to win and i didnt, in any way, help us and im sorry about that. I hunted hard from the first minute of March 24th to the absolute last second on May 15th and just couldnt put it together.

Ive had the worst 2 seasons ive ever had these past 2 years and im frustrated to say the least. From missing birds, spooking birds, birds hanging up outta range, hens taking them away, you name it it has happened and its been all bad. I was apart of a few birds killed this year but i was on the wrong side of the tree on 3 occasions so neither of those birds went home in my truck. But all in all there is always next year (Lord willing) and if i could do it the same i wouldnt change the people on our team. Guess its time to get the bow ready for some summer hog hunting and Sept archery season.

And Drew, thank you sir for your offer. Sorry i didnt get back with you sooner.

First year in the contest for me and all I can say is that I had a great time! Really enjoyed the team I was on and wouldn't have changed a thing. Big Thank You to BJ for helping this idiot posting pics. Really nice how everyone kept a good attitude and really wanted to help each other. That's what a team really is supposed to be.
