Hey guys... I'm here. Going to camp next weekend to listen and be ready for the GA opener. I do most of my hunting in SC and this year I'll get to hunt more during the week. I'm out there every Saturday and Sunday and I'm going on to Kansas the last weekend in April to chase some Rios. Killed 2 last year and 5 in 2010.

Checking in. Ill have to wait until April to get out there but hopefully ill be able to contribute a few Oklahoma rios. I've been on the 2nd and 3rd place teams the past two years so hopefully we can get the top spot this year.

Any ideas for a team name?

To be honest... I don't know exactly. I'm going with a guy who knows a ranch owner. I'll find out.

It's my first year. My son was on your team last year,so I know some about it. I followed it with him. (mtstephens18) but I will need you guys to help guide me through.

I suggest if you haven't done it before you take plenty of time to know the posting rules.

I always use a phone... but a newspaper is fine too. Just MAKE SURE that the phone or newspaper is in the photo that shows you and the turkey. Also, the date on the phone or newspaper must be visible in the up close picture of the turkey.

ts602
03-07-2012, 07:39 PM
Thanks klemsontigers7 I think we need to post kills on this thread before actually posting them to make sure we don't get a DQ.What do ya'll think? Some more names we can toss around is( Red Head Exterminators and Headknockers.)

I think its probably a good idea to post every picture on this thread first so we can review it as a team to A) make sure the pictures will be acceptable per the contest rules and B) make sure its a bird we want to post.

klemsontigers7
03-07-2012, 07:49 PM
Also, if you take a beard or spur measurement, make sure both ends of the tape measure are visible.

Well hopefully i'll get a few chances at em' this year. Ive had alot of good birds that have been coming on a new piece of property i got & have been working on. Ya'll been seeing or hearing many where ya'll go???

CPark58
03-09-2012, 08:13 AM
I havent been scouting yet because our season doesnt open until april but I am the only guy turkey hunting the property and i have gotten some really good reports from shed hunters.

As for a team name how bout everyone put in at least one name then everyone vote on a name they didn't put in and the name with the most votes wins. The only names I got are "Team Sunrise Service" and "Team Avian Flu"

going tommorow morning to listen some more... I got one spot that i can get 3 guys to call off the roost like clock work but this one big tom i've been watchin on camera and seen once is stone silent. saw him once and he saw me first. He's always alone too... kinda strange.

CPark58 noticed in your avaitar it said from Oklahoma for now. Where are you from? Is Oklahoma a good deer hunting state? I guess you can see I like to deer hunt also.

I'm from Savannah and used to hunt mostly in Bryan county though I would break away and go to hunt family property in Towns county from time to time. I moved out here to Oklahoma for work shortly after graduating from GSU and getting engaged. Me and my wife miss Georgia everyday and we are counting down the days until the construction project i am working on wraps up and we get to move back home.

To answer your other question, the deer hunting here is very underrated from a quality of animal standpoint. Field and Stream rated it the #1 sleeper state in the country. Here is a link to some trail cam pictures we get at the place we hunt http://forum.gon.com/showthread.php?t=570098&highlight=

HOWEVER, growing up hunting south georgia I would say that hunting is far more challenging and fun back home than it is here hands down.

went to a different side of my club and heard 2 off the roost this morning... it was in a really thick area though and i have always hunted openings... foodplots, power lines, gas lines, etc. i dont know how i feel about trying to get into that thick stuff sounding like a freight train coming through the woods. dont wanna risk bumping the birds

Big Country Boy
03-10-2012, 09:30 PM
THEY FINISHED THE LAST LITTLE BIT OF SCRATCH I HAD IN FRONT OF CAMERA SO I PULLED IT OUT... NOW THEIR GONNA GO BACK TO DEVOURING MY FOOD PLOT...IT HAS BEEN FUN WATCHING EM ALL SO FAR THIS YEAR, NOW ITS TIME TO LAY EM DOWN:shoot:

trophyslayer
03-24-2012, 09:35 AM
good job klemson... i got skunked this morning... had one coming on a rope and then a group of hens cut me off... i found the perfect set up for tommorow morning though

ts602
03-24-2012, 02:39 PM
I let us down this morning. Had one with a 9 or 10 in beard at 40-45 yds would have had to shoot thru brush and wouldn't take the shot. He didn't see the hen after investigating and turned and went the other way. He went toward the road gobbling, and I heard a truck coming down the road.I heard it stop and they shot from the truck. Boys be careful on WMA's there are idiots out there. Congrats klemson

Big Country Boy
03-24-2012, 09:45 PM
WELL I BUSTED ONE WITH THE BOW..BUT THOUGHT I MISSED HAD A 4 BIRD GROUP COME IN SHOT ONE BUT HE ACTED LIKE IT DIDN'T PHASE HIM SO I SMACKED HIM WITH THE 20 ga. THEN CALLED EM BACK FOR MY BUDDY ONE... HE ONLY HAD A 9" BEARD AND 1" SPURS SO DO YALL WANNA ADD HIM?

Big Country Boy
03-24-2012, 09:48 PM
I HOPE ALL OF YOU ENJOYED FINALLY GETTING AFTER THEM...GOOD LUCK TO YA'LL... I'LL BE GOING AFTER MORE IN THE A.M..GOT SOME BONUS BOYS TO GET HOPEFULLY.

ts602
03-25-2012, 08:52 AM
I think we need to enter mature birds. You boys that were in it last year know what it takes to win this thing, and thats our goal. I think that we just need to make sure that no birds get DQ'ed. If that means looking over the rules again before posting, then thats what we need to do. Congrats Big Country Boy Now go get us a biggen.

CPark58
03-25-2012, 09:25 AM
I say at this point we enter every mature bird but towards the end we wait at least 6 days post non bonus birds to make sure no one kills a bonus bird. The last 2 competitions my team was in the running and had were passed late in the game by teams that were choosy in the birds they posted down the stretch.

To be fair the team that won last year were the Yankees of turkey hunting in the fact that they were an assembly of the previous year's all star team.

Its up to yall but I don't see any harm in posting now but being more selective down the stretch. I also think it best if we review the pics as a team before posting.

Yall keep it up, its good to see some birds hitting the ground. I still have another 2 weeks before I can get after em.

klemsontigers7
03-25-2012, 11:16 AM
I'll get pictures up this evening. Almost got it done again this morning but it just didn't happen. Got on one that would respond every now and then and just headed the other way. I moved about 150 yds and got set up again and he would respond every 2 or 3 times I called until I got aggressive. I cut really hard for 10-15 seconds while he triple gobbled. He was quiet for about 5 min and then I saw a hen. He showed up about 60 yds and looked for me for a minute or so and then just kept on with his hens in front of and behind him. I won't be back out there til next saturday, then it opens sunday in SC and I get to go to my favorite spots.

Big Country Boy
03-26-2012, 04:11 AM
WELL BY LOOKING AT THE PICS FROM SOME OF THE OTHER GUYS ON BONUS POINTS IT LOOKS LIKE MOST MISSED OUT DUE TO BAD PICS...IF I WAS A JUDGE BUT...WHO KNOWS. WE NEED TO MAKE SURE TO GET REALLY GOOD AND CLEAR STARTING - ENDING POINTS ON TAPE MEASURES. ON BEARDS AND SPURS.:flag: I WOULD HATE TO GET A BONUS BIRDIE AND THEN LOOSE THE EXTRA POINTS DUE TO BAD PICS...

WELL I'M HEADED BACK AFTER THEM...GOOD LUCK TO ANY GOING TODAY !!!! :flag:

trophyslayer
03-26-2012, 06:55 AM
good luck big country... had one at 40 yards yesterday morning strutting in the brush but wouldnt commit... all i could see was the top of his fan so i dont know how good he was but i did have a first... after about 30 minutes of going back and forth with his hens hard cutting he let out a quadruple gobble... most i had ever heard before was a triple so that was kinda cool... oh and did i mention i walked 2 miles to get to that bird. I like the idea of posting mature birds now andbeing choosy on the last half of the season

klemsontigers7
03-26-2012, 08:56 PM
Here he is.

klemsontigers7
03-26-2012, 09:01 PM

man... sooooo close to that 10 inch mark... good job brother. i will be at it on saturday with the best turkey hunter i know... my uncle in law... i feel pretty good about my chances seeing as when we were cleaning out his shop this past fall he had about 50 fans in boxes.

any updates guys???.... i haven't been able to do any during the week hunting. To finish out the first quarter of the year we are doing 7-7s. pretty rough stuff. This weekend seems promising and next week i got an invite to a place that is turkey managed so hopefully i will be contributing a bird here soon enough.

klemsontigers7
03-29-2012, 07:36 AM
I listened yesterday morning in SC. Didn't wear camo because I didn't expect to be close to any since I was just listening. Got caught up in the wrong spot at the wrong time and had 3 jakes walk 20 yards by me gobbling at everything that made a noise. They all would look at me trying to figure out what I was but didn't spook. I found a new place to hunt too and plan on listening tomorrow morning. I'll be back in GA tomorrow evening then SC opens sunday.

ts602
03-30-2012, 04:02 PM
Klemson glad your hearing and seeing them. I've been working alot this week, but I got to go this morning. I didn't hear a thing. I went to another farm and heard one yelping, but didn't do any good. May not get to go again till monday.

klemsontigers7
04-02-2012, 12:00 PM
Alright boys... where are you? Chased after some today but didn't kill one. Had one that we thought was going to commit and he never did. When we went to leave the area, we saw a silver 4Runner parked on a road in the woods behind us (we couldn't see it bc it was down at the creek). I know good and well the turkey could see it. We were about 100 yds from the property line and the 4Runner was right on the edge... I guess some people like to park and hunt where birds roost and hang out?

trophyslayer
04-02-2012, 08:10 PM
only thing wrong with these setups is that no long beards have showed up... 3 hunts this weekend and called up hens at every one. At the setup in the cypress bottom we had one gobbling his head off at about 50 yards and he went the other way and shut up,,, 30 minutes later we stood up to move to a field and he busted us at only 30 yards away.

Big Country Boy
04-03-2012, 08:16 PM
come on guys...ya'll gotta get fired up !!! somebody keep us posted...is anybody getting to go??? i went to call for my buddy other day but they were quiet. gonna try another spot this weekend...maybe he will score another..my girls haven't been wanting to go in the heat.

Good luck this weekend CPark. I went at 1pm sunday and hunted till dark and didn't hear a bird. I also went Monday and didn't hear one. The farms I'm hunting the turkey seem to pass through. They are either there or their not. Wouldn't you know that I'm there on the not days. My luck has got to change. I'm going to stay after them though.

I hunted all day Thursday and got on a bird at 5 pm only to have a man come out across the road and start mowing his yard. This in turn sent the gobbler running like a scaulded dog. I'll be after them again sunday. Happy Easter.

Didn't luck up this morning. Got on one right as he was flying down but he must have already made his mind up to head the other way because I never really slowed him down. About 930 we got on one in a field that had 2 hens, they eased our way and only moved about 50 yds in an hour and a half. The gobbler got to about 70 yds and stood there in 1 spot at full strut for 15 min without even moving his head... looked just like a decoy. Eventually another hen must have seen us because we had just ducked barely into the woods and weren't hidden well.

made the biggest rookie mistake of my life... i walked up hill a few hundred yards to get to where i heard gobbles this morning... i get right to where it peaks and flattens out and the first thing i see is 3 full fans about 100 yards out into the plowed hill top headed the other direction. no hens at all with them. they were sounding of at every tweety bird that flew by. i was on one knee behind a clump of weeds. i had no way to put a decoy out so i start to callin, just soft clucks and purrs and they turned (all at the same time, synchronized) and start strutting back towards the brush edge i was in. i shut up. they got to about 60-70 yards and stop in full strut and didnt move for 30 minutes. I started more soft calls and they start just strafing and spinning in circles. still not getting any closer. another 15 minutes go by and i get aggresive... still dont get any closer. i tried shutting up again... still not getting closer. i tried everything i could think of... if there would have been leaves around i would have tried scratching them. so after an hour of watching these birds i get antsy. .. there was a penninsula of brush that extended into the field about 3 ft high. i guestimate that the turkeys were about 50 yards from that point so i go down the hill circle around and belly crawl through that brush... only took about 5 minutes total. I pop my head up to shoot and no turkeys... i look back to my right, towards where i was, and there the were, 2 still strutting and one rubber necking at me. he got to puttin and speedwalking away and the others followed. i went to the original spot and there tracks were 8 yards from my little clump of weeds. I am beyond sick. just should have been patient i guess

I went to cohutta wma sunday morning and found 1 gobbling. He roosted on a hill that was straight up and down. The leaves on top of the mountain are very thin, so I couldn't get close with out spooking him. I set up about 150yds away and when he flew down he went the other way. I did call in a hen that appeared to be coming from him. Sunday after lunch my son and I went to Johns Mt. found a good bit of scratching and we hunted till dark without hearing a thing. Sorry Guys it looks like I'm jinxed this year.

Now I remember why I hate WMAs. Tuesday when I killed my bird, I parked and went down a road to hunt... heard 3 gobblers. There were 3 trucks parked 1/2 mile down the paved road at a gravel parking lot hunting. I know they probably all heard me shoot. So this morning I get there and one of the trucks that was down at the gravel lot is in the spot that I parked at so I have to go up to the gravel lot to hunt. Luckily, no one else is there. I'm not claiming the whole area... but it just sucks that I know there were birds in there and that guy probably went because he heard me shoot. Anyways, heard 1 bird gobble 3 times way up a huge mountain. I went after him but never heard him again and I left and went to work.

There was a truck about 1/4 mile from me last night so I waited on him to come out so I could see what birds he was gonna hunt this morning so we weren't on top of each other. He picked the ones roosted where I killed the bird tuesday... no biggie because I figured I could kill the other ones. The ones I got on gobbled about 50 times last night on the roost but about 5 times this morning, while the other birds were hammering. About 7:30 I had had enough and heard the other guy leave so I went and tried to get on the other ones but it was too late. They had topped out the mountain and crossed a road in the subdivision that borders the WMA. I did get over there and call one to about 60 yds but he was straight up a rock bluff and I never saw him.

Submit it Klemson. Went Friday and didn't hear or see any thing. Went to Berry College Saturday. Had a good day. Heard 3 birds gobbling, and called one of them in. The bad news is My son and I were hunting together and I told him if the birds come up on one side of the hill we were on they were his, and the other side they were mine. The bird come straight up the lead to 60yds and over to my side. Then he decided to go back across the other side. To make a long story short my son killed him at 15yds. So I called in a 5pt bird for the 10th legion. I had a wonderful hunt with my son and wouldn't have missed it for the world.

Just gave #5 a dirt nap. Looks like he's gonna be an 8 pt bird. 1 1/4" spurs, 10"+ beard. I went back to the WMA where I killed the bird last tuesday. The birds were roosted on the other side of the mountain from where they have been recently but it didn't matter, I got over there before flydown time and popped this nice one after he came from about 600 yds away. A guy who I met less than a year ago from my hometown had a box full of box calls that he had made a few years ago. I went there last sunday and we went through the box and found the best sounding one. I've used it on 3 hunts and killed 2 birds.

Thanks... I went back this evening to roost birds and heard a group of 4 where I killed the bird this morning. Ended up hearing 3 or 4 others in different spots on my way out. I have 1 more SC tag but it is pouring rain right now... I'll give it a go as long as it's not raining at daylight. Most of the time it seems to me if they are wet all night long they don't cooperate... but you can't kill 'em in bed.

Way to go klemson. I went yesterday and called in a bunch of hens. I wondered where the gobbler was because I had the hens cutting like crazy. They went down the ridge at 8:30 then at 9:46 had a bird fly off the roost the next ridge over. I had come up part of the ridge the bird was on, so I assume he saw me or heard me thinking I was a predator. Called so more hens in at 10:40 but there was no gobbler.

Sweet, tell her congrats. I went this morning and had to drive an hour to my spot... it was bone dry at my house but apparently rained where I was hunting. Got on one before daylight about fly down time it started pouring. At 730 he was still gobbling in the tree and I hadn't called yet. I called and he shut up. I had 2 other buddies hunting different spots that have a ton of birds and neither heard a peep... guess it was a bad morning around here.

Well fellas #7 and #8 bit the dust this morning. I'm in Kansas and spent yesterday afternoon in a blind bow hunting. That's just not my style so I told the landowner I wanted to run and gun this morning. It's blowing about 35 mph and I heard a couple on the roost and went after them. Killed the first at 7 on the edge of a field... Got to watch him strut and gobble. Then at 730 I spot one in a field about 1/2 mile from the first bird. I get set up and yelp, he gobbles, and here he comes.

I had a 9 6 5 with an 8 pt wildcard to replace the 5 pt bird. He just killed a 7 pt bird so he's going to beat me by 1 point.... had I submitted my 3 highest scoring birds we would be tied but I can't use the 7 pt Kansas bird since I used the wildcard on the 8 pt bird... oh well.
