What type of fruit bush/shrub and fruit is this?

This bush or shrub is in my backyard beside my back patio. The blooms it produces in the spring a very vibrant, redish/burgandy color. The fruit it produces now is very, very sweet smelling. So sweet that it seems the fruit would be wonderful to eat. The smell reminds me somewhat of a fig. The most interesting thing is that the fruit pods only are produced in a very small section of the bush/shrub in proportion to the size of the bush...I would say 10% of the bush.
Please see the included pictures. I would really like to have it identified and know if the fruit is edible.

It’s called a pinapple guava. The inside is edible and pretty tasty. Another interesting tidbit... in the spring you can eat the flower petals. They taste like peppermint.

Thanks weathermantrey, you are dead on! I would have never figured it out. I have searched all types of figs to no avail.

My 5 year old boy is chowing down on them right now. I'm sure he will quit hitting them with his baseball bat now!!!!!
