Tonight when I tried to call someone on my Iphone I got the following message "No Sim Card Installed". This is the second time I've gotten the message. First time I was able to remove the battery and re-seat it by no joy this time around. Anyone else had this problem and what did you do?

I don't even have a clue how to remove a battery on an iphone, but usually when you get the "no sim card" message, the sim card is corrupt. If you've done regular sync's with your itunes account then you should be able to recover all of your data.

Hold the power button and the other button at the same time.

Is it jailbroken?

Just restart your phone with advice from post above.

Don't turn It off my swiping your finger, hold the 2 buttons down.
