Ok boys, i'm looking for a new slate/glass call for this spring season. I already have a Primos "Freak" with Frictionite and an H.S Strut Super Raspy.
I would really like a "custom made" call, not a mass produced but i'm open to all suggestions.

Let me add another part to the original question. Which is "better", slate or glass or which do you find more useful in most situations.

Frank,
You'll get alot of folks who love glass and alot who love slate, it's personal preference. Out of the two I like glass the best but my favorite all around is aluminum. I don't go to the woods without my aluminum Woodhaven.

Not to crack on any one's favorite, Woodhaven calls are not custom. They are production calls...........(by definition a "Custom callmaker" is most often a one man operation who makes calls to your order, and sells a limited number of calls). Or if they are sold at $elmoelmoelmo Pro Shops they definitely aren't custom calls :bounce:
I think the best sounding slate on the market is from Dave Tyree. I prefer slate for the low volume and more realistic sound.
That said, it is important to have both slate and a glass or crystal call in your vest.

Go with Woodhaven.... This company is a proven winner on the stage and in the woods. If you need real in depth info about the calls, hit up ol' D2D. He should be able to tell ya whatcha need to know.

Try to track down a phone # for A fella named Darrin Dawkins out of Rockhill, SC for a custom pot call. He makes slate, glass and anodized aluminum models but only makes a certain number every year. I have the aluminum and it is awesome. I have heard the glass and slate models as well and they are sweet as well. I know GobblinLawyer has his number if I can't find it. Darrin makes his own pots and everything as I understand it.

Take a look at Cody. I've been conditioning a Cody glass model lately; it sounds better all the time. Good rasp and volume with a carbon striker. Mellow purrs and deep clucks with a hickory striker.
I've owned lots of pots, and for an inexpensive glass...I'm reasonably impressed.

Thanks, I bought a handmade slate call last year. It was very nicely made but the slate was rippled and not smooth and I never could get good sound out of it. Should I sand the fire out of it to get it smooth?

Frank, what's the worst thing that could happen if it doesn't work? You still have a call that doesn't sound like a turkey. I would first contact the maker of the call and see if they will make it good. I would imagine if the call maker is worth a hoot he/she will fix it for you.

Spoke with Andy Kaiser yesterday afternoon,,, www.kaiserkalls.com
1st class guy, very enjoyable to talk with. I placed my order for the Purple Heart double side glass over slate If his calls sound anywhere as good as his personality, then I have no doubt i'll be more than satisfied...

For the $ you can't find a better turkey call than Darrin's. His number is (803) 366-3305.
His box calls are outstanding as well.

You got the best of both worlds in that call. Double sided calls give you the option of the high pitch of the glass and the sweet true sound of the slate. You do need both in your bag. One is not necessarily better than the other except when only one is the one he responds to. And you can never guess which one it will be. Welcome to the world of call buying. You need many more I can assure you!

This may sound silly,, but I was impressed with the way he offered to personalize it as in ...This vcall built for "my name here" "good Huntin"
As well as the inlay around the outside of the call..

That's what you get in a custom call. Most will make it like you want it and sign it for you to if you want. Primos won't do that! Bring it to the picnic in March and we'll talk turkey!

I bought a glass call from Andy Kaiser last year.
I was real happy with mine.
I had mine made of zebrawood. No inlay though.
It sure sounds good.
Well I bet some of yall could make it sound better, but I like it :)

It's not about embarasment it is about learning. I always learn something when I sit down with other callers.

I prefer glass as it is easier to make purrs than slate (for me anyway).

A question or 2: Did the caller let you try it before you bought it? I don't think I will ever again buy a call unless the caller allowed me to try it.
I would sand it and finish it by wet sanding. Don't get too aggresive because you don't want the slate to get too thin.

David, No, I bought it off Ebay. DUH. I know now that was dumb.
It was nicely finished and well made, I don't know why he put such a rippley piece of slate in it.
I will try the next one first or at least buy from a recommended maker.
