I have that book at the house as a Christmas present and our church is going to do that program starting at the end of this month. I think it's like a 40 day study type course format. Not to sure on all of the details.

What are your thoughts? Like/Dislike, Good/Bad?

I thought it was fantastic. Rick Warren isn't really saying anything all that new, it's just the way he presents it that makes you really think.
I love the way he starts the study off.
It's not about you!!!!
Our church really grew from this study. I bet yours will too.

go thru it with your church

then go thru it a couple of times on your on with a spiritual friend for the acountability type sections. The book is so involved(in a good way)with so many tangents it's hard to cover it all with the depth of matierial in 40 days. Each time I go thru it I find something I missed or a section that means more or something a little different than it did the first time....good luck with it,donnie

once is not enough

I have had the book for awhile now and went through it on the 40 day schedule on the first pass. I then started through it a second time. I bought several copies and gave to friends in the hope that they would work through it at the same time. I was disappointed when they did not catch on and get going with it. I agree that having a partner to work through it with is a great way to go. I just wish that at least one of the guys I gave the book to would have been interested. I finally got tired of asking them. Good luck with your reading. You will be blessed for the effort.

I was the campaign manager for 40 Days of Purpose at my church. During the campaign, we saw a very significant increase to our Sunday School attendance.

I suggest a lot of pre-campaign publicity and intensive planning. You need to publicize the campaign outside your church as well. We offered free books (Purpose Driven Life) to guests. It's imperitive that everyone keep up, a chapter a week. The Sunday School classes must stay focused. I felt like an hour and a half should have been allocated to the Sunday School classes during the campaign.

Duff, just do a search on "Purpose Driven Life", written by Rick Warren. You may also find info by doing a search on "40 Days of Purpose".

This is one of the best books I have read. It provides direction for the Christian person and will also lay things in proper perspective. Be ready to have your eyes opened.

That I would send this back to the top for anybody that missed it or that is new. It is an enjoyment so far. We are beginning Chapter 10 this week.

I had meant to post already. I am on day #10.

So far, wonderful messages and time well spent. Discussion class is great on this subject as well.

My mother-in-law has done this twice already.

This post is really intended to get this thread back to the top. However, I 'd like to ask if there would be interest in starting a thread where we can discuss this process outlined in the book on a day-by-day basis and focus the discussion on the chapter in the book that covers that particular day? You know, work through the book together on this forum? Anybody interested?

I agree with everyone else. It's a great book and like it says in the preface, it was written to be read with a partner or group of people.

You guys might want to research some on Rick Warren's mentors and associates. Some Humanistic and Socialistic thought training.

I read some of that book, didn't get far though. Something he wrote on the back cover I think about needing so many different translations of the bible to get a correct meaning.....

I think he also quotes some from the "Message", a truly blasphemous "translation" or paraphrasing so to speak.

Before getting caught up in the hype, research this guy, compared to scripture.

Blindhog,

Maybe I missed it somewhere (I'm looking at the back cover and the front and back inside flaps as I type this), but I don't see what you're talking about. The back cover of my copy is nothing but quotes from other authors (among them, Billy Graham, Franklin Graham, and Max Lucado) offering support for the book. The inside covers really don't say anything about offering "different translations of the Bible to get a correct meaning." It does mention that "over 1200 Scriptural quotes and references" were used in the book and that it "challenges the conventional definitions of worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and evangelism." Maybe that's what you're talking about? I noted no challenges in the book to the truth that God loves us and sent His Son Jesus to die for our sins. At any rate, I believe that the book is worthwhile and would help people to understand the place that God intends for them to be in the world. If you find no need for such assistance, that's great.

I'll dig out my copy and find where I saw that. Maybe you have a different printing or something I don't know.

As far as books go I have found the Holy Scripture to be quite sufficient for me to find my direction in my walk with the Lord Jesus. It is very conventional, but I guess that discounts it from Warren's point of view.

Didn't feel this way at all. There were numerous references to passages in the bible.

It would be eye opening to read those critiques in the link I provided.
