Heard a gobbler in a old logging deck yesterday about 7:30 am. I ways standing in a logging road leading to the opening where the gobbler was. Quickly set up where I could see the road and gave him a call. He gobbled right back and I figured I was in business. This went on for about an hour. Didn't call much hoping he would come my way. Heard him leaving the logging deck headed down the road. The area is an old grown up clear cut thick as heck. Hard to get through the brush to try to head him off. Figured as long as he gobbled I would just get in behind him on the road and follow him.
Followed him for over a mile till he finally flew across a river. Listened to him till he went out of hearing. Sat down and waited a couple of hours until I had to leave. Spent my time on the way out stomping out tracks in the mud(taught to do this by the ol'timers I first hunted with over 40 years ago). Went back this morning and didn't hear a thing. But did see where a gobbler had stepped in my tracks. Guess he was just rubbing my nose in it! Gotta love it!
