Owl helped me out big time

I was headed to opposite end of property when an owl fired off right by the house followed by a gobble.

Got setup, did some soft tree yelps, heard no more gobbling. Out of corner of my eye I see three hens coming up the plot, followed by this gobbler in full strut. He went to beating on the jake decoy. The Henn's came toward me.

Hens saw me turn my head and took off. Gobbler stood straight up and probably wondered where Everyone was going. He continued to beat up the jake decoy and gave me a chance to turn my gun on him. Pow. 20 yards away.

From this hunt I learned the the purpose of the gobble is to bring in hens, so if he already has them, don't be discouraged by the silence, he hears you. I also learned setting up as near a gobbler as you can, silently, in the dark, the better. Now it's just a matter of staying frozen and patient, and try to irritate the hens...and he will follow.

Love this sport more every season.
