Strange rocks

I found these in a small plot that had a lot of indian stuff. Looks like sandstone with rough indentions on both sides. Anyone know about them ?

Petrified wood and the holes are from a wood pecker.

lol no. I have no idea what caused the holes. You said to guess.

Is the darker rock softer than the lighter one? Wonder if the lighter one had the holes caused by some kind of tool?

No...they seem to be sandstone of same hardness and weight.

Here is my very uneducated guess.

I like a pump drill design because it reminds me of a kid's toy but think a bow drill works better.

It could have been used as an off-hand drill bit holder. Does it feel right in the hand for that?
