Default Five Gallon Buckets?

I saw a guy with several five gallon buckets with lids that looked to be a out 2.5 feet around on top of them. They did not look like attractors and he was way back in a river. At the time I didnt think much of it but they may be fish traps. Imagine a five gallon bucket with a lit that made it look like a little table. Any idea what the heck it could be?
