Exclamation Snow, Ice, The Ride In and Tailgating

ok folks, this ain't a real snow storm, by most standards... but... snow and ice, and the fact that there are only 3 spreader trucks in the county (maybe a slight exaggeration), should change the way you drive.

on the way in today, within 1/2 mile of the neighborhood exit, i saw a nice, pretty bronze suv do a 180 smack in the middle of 371 / post road, in forsyth county. slid into the ditch almost rolled over completely. the only saving grace was the fact that the outer bank of the ditch was pretty high, and forced the suv to roll back down onto its wheels! someone got pretty lucky.

so, just a few miles down the road on hwy 9, in a nice area filled with pretty SHADE TREES to block the sunlight, and a very small amount of salt... this guy in the pretty red chevy was right there... TAILGATING... check the pic. you can clearly see the snow/ice covering on the road. it was patchy black ice. good thing no quick stops were required.

and yeah, i know, but if i didn't take the picture, who would have believed it? probably everyone. but may the owner will see it and get a clue for the next time.

when will they learn!

So during that same stretch of road you are taking pictures and not driving. Glad no one stopped in front of you.

25-30 at most, on a patchy road. and just because the guy behind me was an idiot, i not going to do something stupid. it could have been a good opportunity to get a new truck!!! or at least some money to help offset the cost!

the suv that spun was flying... i was doing about 25-30 on the icy road and that thing was flying up on me. it was still about 200 yards back when it spun... seeing that was surreal. almost in slow motion. funny that i was checking the rear view as it spun.

These accidents usually end up both drivers have to pay for their own car/truck. No fault due to weather. The police look at it this way because neither driver should have been on road.

Its all the northerners who think us hicks dont know how to drive in ice/snow. They dont realize theres 2 salt trucks in the state.

Some carpetbagger from Michigan told my wife at publix last night that we southerners dont know how to drive. Why do they all come down here with that attitude.

He will be the main highlight on the "Film at 11" tonight.

"Schadenfreude" - it isn't just for Yankees.

If you claim that you are able to drive in "Icy Conditions" then you are an idiot. No one can drive on ice. Snow is a different story though.

Yep heading down buford dam this morning behind a car and one behind me when I look in the side view and a car is passing all of us doing about 50 mph Well, get up around a curve and he had caught up with another group and when they got on a straight away he did it again. I don't know how he didn't end up in a ditch or maybe he did on down the road after I turned on Suwanee Dam. It was bad on Buford Dam and Suwanee Dam. I was in 4 wheel high and still sliding around and seen a couple of cars in the ditch on Suwanee Dam.

The better question is why are people nice to them and encourage them to stay here?

I am not.

There are a lot northerners that don't know how to drive on snow/ice. The ditches are full of cars & trucks from yesterdays snow. Was so cold that there is a lot of black ice & people just won't slow down. Tow bans are in effect so those in the ditch are there tell roads get better.

Exclamation

folks, for the record... stupid runs in every direction!

north, south, east, west. it don't matter.

the folks up north usually have a hard time with the first storm of the season... which serves as a reminder... each storm until the end is usually a little less accident prone. ice is the exception.

usually, in any direction, someone things their 4x4 will save them. there are some things a 4x4/suv can help with, but ICE ISN'T ONE OF THEM!!! on ice, regardless of what you drive, all bets are off.

slow is best, extend following distances, compensate for the other guy because they may not know what they are doing... like the pretty suv that almost flipped, or the tailgater.
