Default Turkey Gun Time...

Time to get a dedicated Turkey gun....looking to get a shorter barreled 12ga. Im looking for something on a budget and saw a remington 870 express turkey today for the first time. It has the 21'' barrel and the remington turkey choke. Anyone have one or recommend it? I already have an over and under for all my bird needs so it wont be for anything but turkeys. Seemed like a decent gun new for under 300 bucks.

I have the same gun with regular black synthetic stocks and love it. It is my go-to gun for everything from home defense to birds to hogs.

i love that barrel! wish i had the gun with one, or even just the barrel to swap out.

my 870/shorty slug smoothie turns on a dime. i'd imagine that ribbed barrel would be just about as nice.

in the back of my mind i argue with the 870 or 1187, 20ga, with the shorty barrel, for pretty much everything.

congrats on the gun!

Havent got one yet trying to get some opinions on it. Have a special going on right now on them at a local shop and wanted to see what everyone thought. From what I have heard its a pretty nice gun for the price.

I believe the 21" vent rib Remchoke barrels are tough to find these days so if it's a good price I'd grab it.

You better go get it while they still have. You can ask all the other questions later.

Good gun at an even better price

I would imagine you'll be happy with your decision. Lots of turkeys have been taken with the Remington pump.

Congrats on a good gun at a good price. I don't think you could go wrong with that one. Now the fun of picking the choke/shell combo and doing some shooting. There are numerous threads on here that discuss various options for that gun, so do a little research and good luck.

They are fine guns. You get a good set up in it and smoke some birds.

Have been reading alot about the Indian Creek Black diamond .665 and the primos jellyhead .665. Obviously the Indian Creek is more expensive....Right now I have some Hornady Heavy Turkey Load #5's that Im waiting to try out with the factory remington turkey choke....any opinions on either?

I had one for several years. Great gun!!!

Try the REM Super Full. It is cheap but shoots well.

If you do search on here there are tons of chokes that shoot well out of this gun.

Never seen a post that said the Hornady's patterned well. Your best bet is some Hevi 6 or 7 and say a Jelly Head 660. Also cause we are in Ga/Fl try SumToy Custom chokes. William makes a fine choke and will swap till you get the one you want. Indian Creek and Pure Gold are also good choices but Remmy's just seem to like Jelly head chokes. Also be prepared to put sights on it. Often short barrel guns dont shoot POA(point of aim). I have 4 and have set up many more and love the shorty's.

I use a reflex site. Mueller Quick Shot. Burris Fast Fire is smaller but more expensive. They are red dot like but just a screen not a tube. There is good and bad in all of them just look at some and choose. Is your gun drilled and tapped?

Default I bought the same gun in 20 gauge

back in March as my new turkey gun. Put a Rem xtraFull choke in it and some Fed Heavy #7s and it throws dramatic patterns out to 50 steps. Very nice gun.

Then you would need to have that done or put a saddle mount for any of the sites like I noted. Now I'm a turkey addict and a gun Nut so If I can help just let me know.

Dawg
I'm glad it worked so well for you. I did a 20 for my local NWTF chapter and had a really tough time getting her to pattern factory shells. I finally got a choke from Sumtoy and it worked well. Not great but well.
I may be too spoiled with TSS and that had my perspective off.
Good luck guys

John

where did you find it for 300? I have 2 and would recommend either the remington super full (which is my go to combo) or the Kicks GT works great too, both shooting Win x range #6's. Good luck, great set up!

I've got that same gun for my turkey gun. Blued metal with 21" barrel. I put a set of MOBU ShurShot stocks on it and taped up the metal. I've got a B-Square saddle mound and a Bushnell Trophy 1.5-4.5X shotgun scope with the turkey plex reticle. I've got an old VENTILATOR choke tube, no longer made, but still available. I shoot 3" Hevi-Shot Mag Blends and get great patterns.
