Hoping to get some help from Forum, as I am new to this area but have permission to hunt some tracts of land north of Deepstep. These tracts are right in the corner of Washington County where Baldwin, Hancock all join. How is the deer hunting? Are poachers bad? When is peak rut? Properties look nice but dnot know what to expect. Thank you all in advance for any information.

As far as population, look no further than the dnr website, Hancock county is #2 in the state for reported kills. Also with Hancock being a 4points on one side county, most of the bucks make it to 2 year olds. As for rut, Halloween, plus or minus a week is normally about right I'd say.

I would be more concerned with thieves than poachers. If it's not nailed down it is subject to sprout legs and walk off. In some cases nailed down does not even count.

Good area but if it doesn’t need to be left don’t leave it. Lot of deer and hogs and now bears.
