Default Goldfinches

Not seeing many goldfinches this year.
One or two a week - sometimes.
I've talked to a number of folks in the Fayette/Hampton area who have said the same .
Where did they go and why?

I had lots of them here near the coast from early Jan. - early March and then they dissapeared when the weather warmed. I thought they usually stuck around until April in this area...

I see one or two 3-4 times each week at the thistle feeder in Roswell. That's about all we have seen in the past several years.

We're still only seeing one or two per week and noticing them on the sunflower seed and not the thistle.
The chickadees are eating thistle.

Maybe we need to buy a new bag of thistle, although we bought this one in the spring.

I'm seeing a few. Got some bluebirds that nested with us this year too.

They are eating my sunflower seed, and my coneflowers are seeding. Pretty cool watching them hang onto a coneflower.
Try planting some of the coneflowers to attract more finches, and they are really pretty when they bloom.
Old timers made a tea of them for colds and other bad things.

Goldfinch tea actually sounds pretty gross.

Had not seen one in months up here in Ky. Then yesterday they flocked in here, at one time there were 20 to 30 under the feeders.
Keep those recipes coming, because I am sure it takes alot of them to make a mess.

We did not have any goldfinches this year but are ate up by house finches and cardinals right now. Only saw a few house finches last year and plenty of gold finches.

Watching them right now. They are feeding on some coneflower heads that are going to seed.
Coneflowers are one of the secrets to goldfinches.
Try planting a few this year. I can hook Ya'll up with some seed if the finches don't eat it all first.

I passed by 1 of my customers houses yesterday who has an outstanding professionally landscaped yard with many different flowering plants and bushes. They were all over 1 particular flower so I need to stop and ask what it was, not a cone flower but she has those also.

We still have a bunch on what is left of the cone flowers.
Gonna have to get out the finch feeders soon, if I want to keep them around.

Just saw this post and had the same conversation with a family memeber visiting from SC. They also have not saw many this year. I had 10-12 at a time last year on my Thistle feeder.
