What I see looks to be termite damage, the ants are feeding on the termites. Temites and ants are natural enemies

thanks. i thought termite but i wasn't sure if maybe they were carpenter ants.

Carpenter do not destroy wood like termites, only make a gallery, and a carpenter ant is big!

If they are very tiny, they are likely Pharaoh Ants, or Sugar ants, pretty much the same. Not very destructive, but they will get into everything, anywhere.
