Squirrel dog catches his 1st squirrel

I took my hawk and dog to an old classmates house to squirrel hawk with them and their kids. It was mid morning, 10am or so, COLD! Finally got on a squirrel. As the hawk was coming down with it, she released and it hit the ground running. Commander took off and put a fatal bite on it. He got bit himself and let go. You can see the squirrel limping badly, slowed it up enough for me to get my hand on it. Talk about teamwork!

We are going to Callaway Gardens on the 19-21st for GA Falconry Association's annual field meet. I try not to venture too far off other than meets.

Redtail hawks are known as being squirrel hawks in the falconry world. Some use Harris's hawks, but a big ole hen redtail is what I would prefer.

She has caught 60 so far this season. Our best day was 5 in a few hours.
