Smokies Specks and More

With my wife away this past weekend, I rode up to the Smokies and stayed with my dad for a few days. We wet flys in 6 different Park creeks in 2 days and absolutely had a ball. On Sunday morning I put some flowers on my great great great grandpa's grave who is buried near Hazel Creek. Life is good :yeah:

Good stuff, and beautiful specks! You know, I have never in my life fished Hazel. My dad and uncle Charlie used to spend a lot of time over there fishing and hunting with your kinfolks, but I have never wet a line in there. I need to.

That last creek looks familiar. I may have fished it today. :)

A 3-4 day trip to upper Hazel Creek should definitely be on your bucket list.

Sounds like you had a great trip! Interesting to see your great grandfather's grave marker. He played a part in one of the most dynamic stories in American History!
There's only one thing missing from your post's narrative:
The GPS coordinates to that pretty little creek!!
Great post WF!!

I've done it once, and it deserves a second trip. Hazel creek is pretty special.

A buddy talked me into hiking up hazel about 18 years ago. We went 5 miles deep to the island and camped. Gonna stay 4 days and the first night we had a flood of biblical proportions. We had to hit the brush with our huge packs since the creek was way to high to cross. We barely got off the island. When we went to bed the water was a couple feet below the campsite and when we woke up it was lapping at out tents. It was chocolate muddy which is rare way back like that. We drug ourselves throu brush and over rock cliffs for a little over 10 solid hours. We were actually setting up camp to stay the night when he walked down the hill and saw the iron bridge at the lake where we tied off the boat. This will give you an idea of the amount of rain they got that night. When we tied the boat off we ran it aground and I chained it to a tree several feet from the water about waist high. When I unhooked it the chain was knee deep in the water! It was by far the worst day I have ever had in my life in the woods. doubt I will ever go back again. But the one day we fished it was great. Browns and rainbows were plentiful.
