Default Gator scute?

Found this on the edge of a river bottom clearcut the other day. Was probably turned up by a skidder. Measures 3" x 4". It's pretty dense and heavy and kind of tings when you thump it with your fingernail. Fossilized maybe? Looks like it's been gnawed on by a varmint. Did I find evidence of a prehistoric gigantuan alligatorsaurus?
