Planting Sunflowers--Input Needed

Hey Y'all,

For the past three years my father in law and I have planted a 1 acre field between our houses with brown top millet.

The field was scraped years ago because a church was going to be built there before my father in law purchased the land. The ground is hard packed red clay. Over the past few year of tilling the ground has become more workable, but it's still far from great.

I had the PH tested and it came back as a 5.0.

We would like the plant sunflowers this year. What do we need to do to have a good sunflower field and when do the seeds need to be in the ground for us to have a field that is ready to hunt on opening day?

Dove proso is better than brown top in my opinion, sunflowers are good if you can keep the deer out, but more intensive to keep the ground clean.

5.0 is certainly far from ideal, but you can make it work. You're just going to need to fertilize more.

Get lime on it ASAP.

Plant your sunflowers in May, early May is when we plant.
