Wood Arrow Material

Will pine make a decent arrow. I would like to make my own arrows completely from scratch. So can the pine in Georgia make a decent arrow? I realize that there will be much work and will take much time and many shafts cut to get a few the same spine and weight. But can it be done? Thank you guys very much!

Yes it definitely can be done. I've done it and I'm not sure I would do it again.:biggrin2: white pine will work but they are fragile. Douglas fir is good, and I had really good luck with poplar.

Consider this. If southern yellow pine were good for arrows there would surely be somebody selling them. An arrow CAN be made from almost anything. I'm not speaking from experience, just observation. I think you will find what you need in a few nice pieces of river cane.

I knew it wasn't optimal. Just wondering if possible or anything better around. Thank you for the responses! I will get to work soon hopefully. I'm attempting to build my first bow and wanted to build the arrows to go with it. I know I could just order some and stain, crest, and fletch them. I just wanted to everything for this project. I tried to knap a point out of some quartz I found and discovered that I have no natural ability at that. Do you know of anyone who will knap and sell me a point or have any good youtube videos to watch? How close in weight can I get stone points. I would like to have at least 6 arrows that weigh within 50 grains and at least 3 within 20. Thank you again for all the help!

Met a few guys that made arrows out of privet, but I'm not a wood arrow specialist. Seen them fly and they seemed to work well. plenty of privet in GA.

Sawtooth is right, if you want to make some effective primitive arrows you can't beat rivercane. I found a spine tester of some sort is the key here, as you will find cane will range from 35 to over 100 pounds and not look much different. If you get the right spine they will surprise you how good they shoot. As far as stone points: I know what you mean about not being a natural at it, but it just takes practice. Just remember, the point is already there, you just remove the extra. Sounds simple enough huh?:biggrin2:
