Shot my first deer in 1968 with a Marlin lever action in 30 US Carbine with open sights. It was a nice 8 point with 16 inch spread.

6.5X55, 257 Roberts, 250 Savage, 7.62X39. I have a Ruger 77/22 hornet that I picked up at a pawn shot recently that I was thinking of making a back yard deer gun. Head shot. I also have a 22-250 I want to try next year.

I hunt with a few odd balls: .30 Rem., .32 Rem., .35 Rem., .35 Whelen, .358 Winchester, 9.3x62 (actually, my son's rifle), .375 H&H, .404 Jeffery, and .458 Lott. These are in addition to the regular calibers, like two '06s, a .308, a.260 Rem., two .270s, a .300 WSM, a .300 Win. Mag., along with various and sundry milsurp calibers.

Only in the last 15 years did I get interested in some of the old calibers. I killed my first 60-or-so deer with two rifles: a Model 70 in .30-'06. and a Marlin 336 in .35 Rem.

My main rifle is a 264 win mag, but I will also use at times a 260 Ackley improved, 280 Ackley Improved, 6.5-06, 25-06 Ackley Imporved, 6mm remington, 6.5x300wsm, 7mm stw, or a 6mmx284.
