Anyone familiar with this old mining history in Acworth?

Location: Woods bordering northern end of old Cherokee Estates subdivision, near hwy 92 & Wade Green Rd., about halfway between Acworth and Woodstock.

I grew up in that subdivision in the '70's. I practically lived in the huge lot of woods described above. There were many pits, a couple of horizontal mine shafts, and also a few artifacts to be found. Some entrenchments that looked to be from the Civil War. Also found some arrowheads. Very fond memories of mine.

I was wondering if anyone was familiar with that area. I always wondered what was mined there (gold?) and curious about the history, in general. It has been destroyed in the last few years by a new subdivision, with its entrance on Woodstock Rd.

That was known as the Kellogg Mine, I think. Probably owned by the Tysons back when it was in operation. They owned most of southern Cherokee County back then, after the Land Lottery.
