Dismantling & Moving Storage

We have a 2 story 16' x 16' storage building to move from one property to another. (Home Depot builds the same building on site for about $8K). Moving the building intact is not an option due to space and terrain issues at both sites.

Anyone have experience dismantling and rebuilding this type building at another location? (we own the building and both properties). Plywood floors, OSB shingled roof, T-11 siding.

You are basically going to have to take it apart to small and light enough sections that you can move with the resources at your disposal. Then put it all back together on your new prepared site.

Why not just build a new one ?

Or maybe rebuild the second story only.

Is it screwed or nailed together for the most part? If it's nailed, then taking it apart will be a lot trickier to do with minimal damage.

You're talking about a whole lot of work, especially if it's assembled with nails. I would bet that it is, because screws are expensive and time consuming. If you really want to do this, invest in a good reciprocating saw and a pile of 9" demo blades.

Step 1: Strip the roof so that you don't ruin 20 blades cutting through the shingles
Step 2: Cut the roof into 4' wide panels by following a rafter with a recip saw blade.
Step 3: Cut the nails holding each roof panel at the ridge beam, eaves, and side walls (on the 4 end panels) and remove each panel individually. Mark them as RR1 (Right Rear 1), R2, R3, R4/RF (Right Front), LR1 (Left Rear 1), L2, L3, L4/LF (Left Front)
Step 4: Take down the ridge beam by cutting the nails on each end.
Step 5: Cut the 2nd floor walls into 4' panels. Label them 2RL1 (2nd Floor Rear Left 1), 2R2, 2R3, 2R4/2RR (2nd Floor Rear Right), 2LR1 (2nd Floor Left Rear 1), 2L2, 2L3, 2L4/2LF (2nd Floor Left Front), 2RR1 (2nd Floor Right Rear 1), 2R2, 2R3, 2R4/2RF (2nd Floor Right Front), 2LF1 (2nd Floor Left Front 1), 2F2, 2F3, 2F4/2FR (2nd Floor Front Right)
Step 6: Cut the 2nd floor floor into 4' panels and label them similar to the roof panels; 2RR1 (2nd Floor Right Rear 1), 2R2, 2R3, 2R4/2RF (2nd Floor Right Front), 2LR1 (2nd Floor Left Rear 1), 2L2, 2L3, 2L4/2LF (2nd Floor Left Front)
Step 7: Cut the 1st floor walls into 4' panels and label them similar to the 2nd floor panels; 1RL1 (1st Floor Rear Left 1), 1R2, 1R3, 1R4/1RR (1st Floor Rear Right), . . .
Step 8: Cut the bottom floor into 4' panels and label them similar to the 2nd floor floor panels; 1RR1 (1st Floor Right Rear 1), 1R2, 1R3, 1R4/1RF (1st Floor Right Front), 1LR1 (1st Floor Left Rear 1), 1L2, 1L3, 1L4/1LF (1st Floor Left Front)

To reassemble, reverse the process. Start at the back corner and work across and forward. Everywhere there is a cut, sister in a 2x4 to catch the edge of the plywood. When it's fully assembled, reshingle the roof.

You need to contact a house moving company. You are going to have to have oversize permits and the like if you are going to be on public roads.

A good house moving company could separate the top and bottom floors without removing the roof.

If you try to do it yourself you are going to need some specialized equipment unless you just comepletely dismantle the top floor which will be expensive coming down and going back up.

Depends on how far you want to move it but you can do what we did one time and call a wrecker company and they usually have a low boy trailer or truck they can move them on,6 years ago it cost me and a buddy of mine $350 to move ours from Kennesaw to Shadydale. It was a 83 mile move. The wrecker company handles the permits and all the paper work for you. Good Luck!
