Coosa Report 3-9

Got out on the Coosa today to chase some white bass. Was a balmy 26 degrees at the house this morning, so waited until about 9:30 to get on the water. Put in at the Lock and Dam. The water temp has dropped and was 48-49 degrees all day long, and the water was stained but not too bad. The level was about right for the spots I like to fish, and the flow was stout but manageable.

We started out about 3-4 miles downstream of the lock and dam and generally fished spots back upstream towards the twin bridges. Assume the cold front and drop in water temps slowed them down considerably, but we were able to find some fish, particularly at one key spot. Eddies and current breaks were the key. Had to find the sweet spot on every cast and work the bait real slow if you wanted a bite. We did hit the sand bar at the lock and dam on our way back to the ramp and only picked up one white bass there. All fish today came on small crank-baits and a 1/4 oz rat-l-trap. Didn't catch anything on a jig. While the numbers weren't great, the quality was very good as most of our white bass were good sized females. We didn't catch any dinks at all today. Got into some nice crappie as well.

Thanks! I was pretty pleased with what we came home with considering that drop in temps to the upper 40s.
