General James Wilkinson, American soldier and statesman.
He was twice the Senior Officer of the U.S. Army, appointed to be the first Governor of the Louisiana Territory in 1805.

After his death, he was discovered to have been a paid agent of the Spanish crown. Wilkinson's actions have since been severely condemned by a number of historians and politicians such as Theodore Roosevelt, who posited that "In all our history, there is no more despicable character."

Wilkinson County, Georgia, is named for Wilkinson. A Georgia historical marker on the courthouse square gives a brief biography of the general and identifies him as the source of the county's name.

Oh no!

One of the more interesting things he did was he took Mobile from the Spanish without firing a shot. He did this in 1813 just prior to the First Creek War. In doing so, he opened up the Tensaw district just above Mobile which was flooded with white settlers. This action led to the building of Ft. Mims.
