AR 10 Caliber Options ?

Just wondering what are some other good deer caliber options for the AR 10 besides 308. Just ordered a PSA Gen 2 lower. Thought about 7-08 since it is hard to find a reasonably priced 338 Federal barrel to fit.

Anything in the -08 family. A 243 and the 708 sound ok, but just as logical to go with 308. A huge range of different vendors and multiple loads from each. Can't really go wrong.

If you're not loading your own, others could get expensive.

That's a benefit for the ar15 platform, in either 223556 or 76239, you can get good hunting ammo or cheap plinker stuff.

I am going to get a 308 upper as well. Just want another caliber . I do reload so I am not worried about expensive ammo. You have to reload when u shoot Wearherby calibers.

Here is a list I found:
220 Swift
22-250
6mm-250
.243 Winchester - same bolt as 7.62x51
6MM Remington
6MM Creedmoor
6×47mm Lapua
257 Roberts
6.5×47mm Lapua
6.5mm Creedmoor - same bolt as 7.62x51, and can be formed from 7.62x51 brass
.260 Remington
7mm-08 Remington
7.62×51mm NATO - Original AR-10 caliber
.308 Winchester - considered interchangeable with 7.62×51mm NATO according to SAAMI.
.300 Winchester Magnum
.338 Federal
.358 Winchester
.45 RAPTOR

don't throw out 6.8 SPC in the 15 platform :)

Aint a hill of beans worth of difference between 7-08 and .308 at practical hunting range with similar weight projectiles. Those that claim they can tell a difference between a 140gr 7-08 and a 150gr .308 have a 50/50 chance of guessing right.
The one place however you would notice a difference is if you buy ammo at Wal mart. Then 7-08 typically runs $10 a box more for the same brand and is harder to find.

You got me thinking now, I almost bought one of the PSA AR10's the other day when they were the daily deal, but buying a lower and then putting together an upper with a 7mm08 barrel would interest me more, in fact the 6.5 Creedmoor would really be interesting, should be able to use the same mags as .308 as well. Hmmm? I reload as well, so ammo isn't an issue.

Looked around some last night and saw several 338 Federal barrels. Need to check the PSA sight to get the barrel info. I think the DPMS style fits the PSA.

I'm a fan of the .308 "family" and have deer hunted with the 7/08, .308 and .338F a good bit. I, personally, prefer the .308 over the 7, but I'm not recoil sensitive.

When I purchased my first .338F in 07 or 08, I pretty much left my several .308s and 06s in the cabinets and used the .338F in their place. The .338F is a great cartridge and is a hammer on deer sized game.

As a real world comparison, the 200gr Fusion load for the .338F outperforms the Rem 200gr load for the .35W in velocity, energy and trajectory.
