Couple from today , and what happened to this fishes tail

Got ahold of a couple in about an hour right before dark. What is the deal with the tail on this fish? Is it some kind of parasite or did something get ahold of it? It's the smaller of the 2 fish but I don't think there's much in this little river that would try to make a meal of a fish this size. What y'all think?

Could be just abrasions ---- or bite marks from the black animal on the bank in the background of the second pic! :)

Almost all the smaller bass we caught this spring were gashed up pretty bad. There are gators around and in the past, we'd occasionally catch some with tooth marks thinking it was from them. After catching the ones with longer cuts I'm thinking they were grabbed and then lost by osprey. I have been seeing more and more of those fishing hawks lately. I don't remember seeing any at all growing up around here.
