Default My Heart Is In Havana

Spent a lot of time in the car this week commuting back and forth to Donewoody, and I heard a song called My Heart Is In Havana.

I don't get it. I grew up in a trailer park in SC, my heart is NOT in a trailer park in SC.

My wife grew up in WV, her heart is NOT in WV. She still likes WV, but her heart is not there.

Why would your heart be in Havana? I don't hear my Vietnamese friends claiming that their heart is in Vietnam, or my African friends claiming that Ghana is where their heat is. Something's I will never understand.

I think some people reminisce of where they call home. Many folks had to leave and go to big cities or even new countries.
I don't believe their heart is there in remembering the poverty but some folks heart is in the fond memories of even terrible places to live.
Even if one can now afford caviar, sardines are still good.

My Dad likes to go home in his mind. He always has. I guess a part of his heart is there back then. It brings him comfort. Most of his family moved on to places like Atlanta and they don't even like to remember. Their heart is not "there" anymore.

Many a people's hearts( for security-economic-social reasons) go back to the past. For many yearning for Havana is no different as some yearn for the days and places before Reconstruction or to a fifty-60 yr period thereafter. Same deal. Different day. Different place.

My heart is,and always will be in the Southern Appalachians, no matter where I go to. These mountains are a major part of who I am. I can't remove them from me, no matter if I moved to Greece.

I have ties here. Very few.

My Grandmother passed in 2000.
My Father a year and 10 days ago.

One parent left. My lil' Mama.

When she's gone, I'm out of here.
I hate it for the most part.

Georgia is nothing like it WAS when I was
growing up as a kid and young adult.
Now, it pretty much sucks.

I was born here, lived here for a few years in HS and have lived here pert much my entire adult life. Jawga is going to be in the rear view mirror as soon as my son goes off to school.

I get the whole in your blood thing, but its like some people wear the not so great of times like a badge of honor.

I spent my childhood in the Appalachian mountains, I think of those days often. Reality is as close as this laptop, Google Earth shows "progress" has taken that farm and the surrounding hills of my memories. Flat topped mountains and widened roads have replaced them. Yes, it's in my heart, but there's no going back.

The wife and I talk of moving to a place more satisfying to us both. Slow the pace and enjoy the meaningful things.

I have lived in Gwinnett my entire life except when I was in the service. I still live there and I miss it. I didn't have to leave it. It left me.

Yes " not so great of times like a badge of honor". Surviving hard times ... and to rise from hard times... is a badge of honor for many. Or to have lived in times where the political and social ideals are spent, does not mean that you don't re-live those politics or ideals with nostalgia.

Abandon the metro Atlanta at all costs. Aside from slapping at gnats all summer, you would be much happier in south GA. There's still a few of us bitter weeds down here that you would get along with quite well.

Sherman burned Atlanta 150 yrs too soon. The only thing I have to do with that place is changing airplanes at the Maynard Jackson Airport, or whatever yall are calling it now.

They built two >$570,000 houses across the street from me and they both sold within a month. They broke ground to build $500,000 condos in downtown East Atlanta. A studio apartment in the new Alexan costs $1,200/month (never mind that a guy got killed when he came home to his apt. as it was being robbed. They caught the killer).

In Monopoly terms, we have a little green house on Ventnor maybe Baltic. Maybe one day someone will offer us a bunch of money so they can put a big red hotel on it.

you can never go 'home'.

if you do, it'll break your heart.

'home is where the heart is'

I returned home for my 50th high school reunion, in 2012.

all those guys got old, and my town got modern.

was sad...........

I suppose my wife and I are a bit different than everyone else. We both left home at 18 and 19 and never looked back. We only look toward the next adventure.

There's a John Anderson song called Look Away that talks about going home.. It ain't always what it's cracked up to be. Don't know how to post a link.

Wife and I can live in a bread sack if need be.

I will make sure it is a warm, safe and comfortable bread sack.

I don't think I've ever returned someplace I lived in the past and found it the same.

Try to merge the past and the future and you get "Pasture".

I look towards my future much more eagerly, fondly, and hopefully.
Not as much of that going on when looking towards the past...
I guess I had an upbringing that was not so likely to produce the outcome that it finally did...

It's probably the cultural aspects that people miss. The music, hog killins', syrup makin', mojitos, cigars, certain games & and activities, food dishes, aunts & uncles, hog calling, Caja China box pork, ramps, the views, and trains.
