Herter 25-06 serial # 38937; How old and what it's worth?

A friend just passed along a new Herter 25-06 with the serial #38937 and I was wondering how much it was worth and was it a trustworthy good shooting gun? I can't find much information and was hoping someone could help me out or point me in the right direction.

Thanks, Michael

All I know about them is they were built for Herters on a Mauser action. Some folks say FN. Others say BSA and still others say Zastava.

In any case, it's a great action with a lot of potential. If it doesn't shoot well, it certainly can be made to shoot well with a little work.

I found this on the Guns and Ammo forum about your rifle. No way of knowing how accurate it is:

"Herters J-9 series rifles were built in England by BSA on their Mauser actions . Series U-9 were built by Zastava in Yugoslavia. They were both of very high quality, but there is little collector interest."

that is pretty close to what Blue Book says too..just European Mfg..nothing specific...although rare there is no collector interest
