Ok guys and gals - let’s feed the deer! (updated with mid January 2018 pics)

We have some plots that are doing well and the deer are hammering them.

Will try to get some cages up so we can make some real assessments on how well the plots grew.

Sadly - our largest plot (3+ acres) was planted too early, not prepared as well as it should be and is infested with weeds. Lots of wheat, oats and clover in field but the competition is pretty bad. Hoping for a good, hard freeze to kill some of the weeds.

Hope everyone’s plots are doing well!

Best of luck.....

Jim...Come mid December we should have some happy, happy deer. Didn't make it down this weekend but plan on spending most of Thanksgiving week at the farm. Seeing lots of deer and with the timely rains, plots are all doing great. Brassicas, wheat, oats, rye, durana and ladino clover.

Thx Jim! So do your plots. I'll give most all of the credit to timely rains on our place. When I get down later this week I'll post up pics of the clover we planted this fall. Didn't expect much out of it until next spring but with the warmer temps and rain it growing vigorously.

Some of the boys are hunting this weekend so there may be a few less deer come Monday.

I may try to make it down for at least one afternoon of hunting, a campfire, a few adult beverages and some Jamey Johnson. The bow is begging for at least a few more trips!

Have not pulled the cam cards in a month or so - may do that and move a few to the plot edges and see if I can get some “Triple C Rated” photos!

Best of luck to all....

Ours look pretty rough right now. With deer pressure and no rain, I'm not sure how well they will do for winter feeding. We need some rain bad around here

Ours are clipped so clean, it looks like you used a special lawnmower.

We put out three cages this weekend and I am very much looking forward to seeing what the growth is!

Good luck, all!

Food plots

I have 7 food plots - one 5 acres, the others 1/2 acre to an acre each. Last 2 years planted in wheat oats & purple tops. The deer never touched the turnips. This year we planted wheat, oats and daikon radishes. They are not eating any of the radishes (yet). I know we havent gotten a good freeze yet - but strange they arent touching the radishes at all. They arent hitting any of the food plots hard (yet). We still have acorns in the woods. Could it be that my deer dont like brassicas ..??

It took my deer 3 years of planting, before they ate the radishes .......

(add some clover in with your mix, it really will do a lot of good for the deer and the soil)

Hard frost - hoping these cold nights will help kill some weeds.

Will be down this weekend to hunt (I think) and to check plots / cages and cameras.

Mid January

Plots are hammered and the snake trails, buggy roads and fire breaks that were planted (which were being ignored) are now getting eaten well.

Food is scarce and something green is desirable.

It is still cold but the longer days that we are starting to see (2 minutes per day!) will hopefully spark some additional growth.

Good luck guys!

Looking good Jim, longer days and warmer soil temps will have those plots growing like crazy soon!!

Thanks David.

We only planted oats, wheat, crimson clover and ladino clover this past fall.

We are going to work to get some brassicas into the mix this coming October.

We are gonna add about three acres of plots on this 247 acre tract so that will move us into the 4% of total acreage range - roughly 10 acres.

There are some additional areas we may be able to plant but we are gonna get the easy areas first.

Feed ‘em up, brother!
