So, I've been following several deer on my trails cams this year. But many of them took off as they changed from their feeding pattern. But this one started becoming a regular visitor. The junk at his bases is what sold me on targeting him.
So this weekend, I had to go in with a climber. The wind had changed and my normal stand wouldn't work.
On my second hunt, a morning hunt, I spooked at least 6 deer off the spot as I slipped in. I almost turned around and left to find another location.
I decided to stay and once I was settled in, I made a few doe bleats and soft grunts. Just wanted to say... "hey guys, all is well, come on back in..."
Within 3 minutes the first deer came back in. Within 30 minutes about 5 deer had come and gone, with one broken 6 staying the whole time.
Then I saw a bigger deer coming down the trail. I new he was a shooter, but I wanted to check his bases to see if he was the one I was targeting. He never stopped long enough for me to get a look and he walked back into the bushes.
After 20 minutes, he did not come back out. But another, smaller, 8 point came out. He was the other deer I knew was using the area and the one I wanted to make sure I didn't take.
So now I'm sure the first deer is the one I wanted and my head went to thinking "I blew it" and I started thinking about the next hunt....
Well..... about 10 minutes goes by and guess who walks back out!! Yup, no thinking about it now... Gave him a DRT nap right then and there.
God has blessed me and my wife with a great season! She got her first deer this year! She won't let me post her picture online. It was a basket rack 8 point and I'm very proud of her! The second set of pics here was my first deer of the season.
