Strange tree roots

I was out wandering around, and found a tree that had grown it's roots in an almost perfect circle, about 2' across, 10" high with a mostly flat bottom.

Interesting. My guess would be that there was an object there at one time that the root grew around.

I also thought that might be the case. The tree is only 4-6", can't say what kind though. I was so fascinated by the roots, I forgot to look at the leaves. Duh...

I`ve seen ironwood (hornbeam) trees down in the river and creek swamps grow a root system like that.
